Four St. Lucie pitchers combine for 18 strikeouts
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 8, 2022) – The St. Lucie Mets hit and pitched their way to an impressive 9-6 victory over the Daytona Tortugas on Opening Night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Friday.
The Mets offense bashed 15 hits while four St. Lucie pitchers combined to strike out the Tortugas 18 times.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Mets scored the next five runs. Shervyen Newton delivered two-out RBI double in the second inning to give the Mets their first lead, 2-1. In the third inning William Lugo and Justin Guerrera registered a pair of two-out RBI hits to push the lead to 4-1.
Alex Ramirez collected the first of his three hits from the leadoff spot with a RBI double in the fourth to make it 5-1.
The Tortugas took advantage of a throwing error in the sixth inning and plated four runs. Sebastian Almonte blooped a two-run double to tie the game 5-5.
The Mets quickly answered in the top of the seventh. Omar De Los Santos led off with a single, stole second and scored on another Lugo RBI hit. Guerrera then belted a double to make it 7-5. Jack-Thomas Wold capped the inning with a RBI single for an 8-5 lead.
Mets starter Keyshawn Askew limited the Tortugas to one unearned run over three innings. The southpaw struck out four batters.
Nick Zwack followed with three innings to get the win. Zwack struck out seven batters, including the first five hitters he faced.
Grant Hartwig chipped in with two perfect innings and four strikeouts.
Nate Jones closed out the ninth inning in a non-save situation with three punch outs.
Ramirez led the way at the plate by going 3 for 5. Stanley Consuegra, Lugo, Guerrera, Wold and Newton had two hits each. Eight of the nine players in the lineup recorded a hit.
The Mets (1-0) and Tortugas (0-1) play game 2 of their series at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
