Game Recap: David Peterson stars as Syracuse wins 3-0

David Peterson pitched six scoreless innings with six strikeouts for Syracuse in a win on Friday night (Rick Nelson).

Moosic, PA – The Syracuse Mets, on the heels of a masterful pitching performance from David Peterson, won their third straight game at the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Friday night, 3-0. This is Syracuse's second straight shutout victory, and the Mets have held the RailRiders off the scoreboard for the past 19 innings.  Box Score  

David Peterson was the biggest piece to the winning puzzle for Syracuse on Friday night, tossing six scoreless frames in a brilliant start. The left-hander allowed just three hits while walking two and striking out six. Peterson has now pitched 11 straight scoreless frames, including an excellent start on Sunday against Lehigh Valley when he went another five scoreless innings with eight more strikeouts.   

Syracuse (13-20) launched in front on the first pitch of the game when Johneshwy Fargas homered over the left-field wall to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Fargas returned to Triple-A after playing 18 games with Double-A Binghamton. The Mets weren't done scoring though as Tzu-Wei Lin reached on a fielding error, moved to second on a stolen base with one out, and scored on a Travis Blankenhorn single to center field, giving Syracuse a 2-0 edge. Blankenhorn finished the evening 2-for-4 at the plate, the only Syracuse player with multiple hits in the game.    

The Mets put the exclamation point on the night in the top of the eighth inning. Quinn Brodey led off with a solo home run into the back of the Syracuse bullpen in left-center field to push the Mets advantage to 3-0. Brodey is now 4-for-10 this series with two RBIs, a home run, a double, and two runs scored. Brodey has hits in five consecutive games, batting .412 (7-for-17) during that span.    

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (11-22) struggled against Syracuse's pitching staff all night, collecting just three hits. The Mets bullpen backed up Peterson's superb start, tossing three scoreless innings to clinch the victory. Félix Peña went two and one-third scoreless and hitless frames with one strikeout, retiring all seven batters he faced. Alex Claudio followed, pitching the final two outs of the ninth to give the Mets their third win in four tries this week at the RailRiders. Claudio, 30-year-old left-hander, has a 2.13 ERA in eight appearances this season and has secured two saves.   

Syracuse plays the penultimate game of its six-game series at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with a late afternoon matchup on Saturday set for a 4:05 p.m. first pitch. Left-hander Mike Montgomery is set to start for the Mets, opposed by right-hander Hayden Wesneski for the RailRiders.
