St. Lucie wins first game 2-0, second game 5-1
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (June 5, 2022) – The St. Lucie Mets swept Sunday's doubleheader against the Daytona Tortugas at Clover Park. The Mets won the first game 2-0 (Box Score), then won the second game 5-1 (Box Score).
The doubleheader sweep ran the Mets home winning streak to 10 games. The Mets have won six straight games overall. They improved to 12-2 vs. Daytona this season.
In game 1, the Mets held the Tortugas to one hit. Daytona's only hit was a sixth inning double by Ilvin Fernandez that was nearly caught on a diving try by right fielder Carlos Dominguez.
The Mets scored the only two runs of the game on the same play, an error by catcher Daniel Vellojin in the fifth inning. With no outs and the bases loaded, Kevin Villavicencio grounded a ball to third baseman Braylin Minier, who threw home for the first out of the inning. Vellojin tried to throw to first base to get Villavicencio for a double play, but threw the ball down the right field line allowing Raul Beracierta and Brady Smith to score for a 2-0 lead.
Calvin Ziegler returned from the injured list to make the start. He pitched two hitless innings with a walk and four strikeouts.
Dedniel Nunez pitched a perfect third inning on just six pitches.
Christian Scott (1-0) tossed the final four innings to get the win. He allowed one hit and struck out seven, including five in a row to end the game.
In game 2, the Mets drew a season-high nine walks. Four of the walks came in the first inning against Daytona starter Julian Aguiar (3-5). Aguiar walked the bases loaded, then Stanley Consuegra tied the game on a run-scoring ground out. With the bases reloaded, Junior Tilien took a walk to force in the go-ahead run.
Aguiar was taken out the game and Jack-Thomas Wold smashed a two-run single on the first pitch from Owen Holt to put the Mets up 4-1.
Tilien hit a double in the fifth inning and scored on a Vincent Perozo grounder to make it 5-1.
That was plenty of offense for Mets starter Javier Atencio (1-0), who pitched five strong innings to get the win. Atencio limited the Tortugas to one unearned run. He scattered two hits, walked two and struck out five.
Raimon Gomez pitched a hitless sixth and Nate Jones closed out the game with a perfect seventh.
Justin Guerrera drew three walks in the victory.
The Mets (34-16) are off on Monday. They return to the diamond on Tuesday when they start a six-game road series at the Jupiter Hammerheads. First pitch on Tuesday from Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium is 6:30 p.m.

He struck out 5 and allowed no ER over 5 innings for St. Lucie today. Fastball touched 95 with 17 inches of sweep on his curveball.
