Box Score

ERIE, PA – Jesus Vargas was superb over a career-high seven and a third innings pitched, but the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (3-10, 31-51) fell to the Erie Seawolves 4-0 in the series opener at UPMC Park, dropping their seventh game in a row.

Vargas (0-7) retired fifteen batters in a row, spanning from the third through eighth innings. In that stretch, Vargas had four consecutive 1-2-3 frames. He takes the loss despite allowing only two earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts.

Erie (8-4, 47-34) did get two runs in the second off Vargas with the bases loaded on a two-run single from Eric De La Rosa. They added two in the eighth after Vargas left the game, on catcher's interference and a bases loaded walk.

Seawolves starter Wilmer Flores pitched three scoreless and hitless frames. Adam Wolf (5-2) got the win allowing just two hits over three innings in relief of Flores. Flores, Wolf, Bubba Derby, and Nick Kuzia combined on the three-hit shutout, issuing only one walk and striking out eight.

The two teams continue their series on Wednesday evening with first pitch at 6:05 PM and pregame coverage getting underway on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network at 5:50 PM.

Postgame Notes: Three of the last four Rumble Ponies starters have gone at least seven innings (Jose Butto, Jose Chacin, and Vargas).
