In the nightcap, Mets wasted a 10 scoreless innings by Bret Saberhagen and 3 more scoreless by the Mets bullpen. Padres broke through against Mike Maddox with solo homers by Tony Guinn and Phil Plantier to go up 2-0 in the 14.  David Segui doubled in Luis Rivera to cut the deficit in half with 1 out but Jeff Kent flew out and Rico Brogna grounded out to end it.

Mets split a pair with the Giants. 

In Game 1, Jay Hook (W,7-9) gave up 3 runs on 9 hits but the Mets scored 5 in the 4th on a Frank Thomas 2 run double and an Elio Chacon 2 run single. 

Game 2, Mets jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead but the Giants then scored 9 unanswered runs to lead 9-2 in the 7th.  Mets came back with 6 runs in the 8th  highlighted by a Joe Pignatano 2 run double and had the tying run on 1st but Juan Marichal came in and retired the last four batters of the game to preserve the Giant win.
