LAKEWOOD, N.J. (May 31, 2023) — 3B/2B Mateo Gil smashed a solo home run in game one and added a multi-hit contest in game two. However, the Jersey Shore BlueClaws swept the doubleheader from the Brooklyn Cyclones, taking the opener, 9-3, and the finale, 5-0, on Wednesday evening at ShoreTown Ballpark.

Brooklyn (20-25) started fast in the lid-lifter. CF Alex Ramírez started the game with a walk and, two batters later, SS William Lugo deposited a two-run home run onto the berm in left. His first long ball of the season put the Cyclones ahead 2-0.

In the third, Jersey Shore (24-21) jumped ahead for good. 2B Freylin Minyety started the frame with a ground-rule double to right and came in to score on a C Arturo De Freitas single.

Following a RF Jared Carr and a flyout, CF Marcus Lee Sang sent a fly ball that was overrun in center for a double, tying the game at two. 1B Rixon Wingrove smashed the next pitch for a two-run single placing the BlueClaws ahead 4-2.

After a flyout to right, SS Casey Martin deposited a two-run home run onto the grassy knoll behind the left field wall. His fifth blast of the campaign doubled Jersey Shore’s advantage to four, 6-2.

With one out in the fourth, Gil smashed a ball beyond the fence in left for a solo homer. The 22-year-old’s fourth blast in Brooklyn pulled the Cyclones within three, 6-3.

The BlueClaws erased that tally and added one more to their lead in the bottom half of the frame. Minyety began the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a missed catch error on a pickoff throw. A flyout scooted him to third before scoring on a 3B Nick Ward knock. He’d steal second and cross on a Lee Sang single, providing Jersey Shore a five-run, 8-3, cushion.

Minyety wreaked havoc again in the sixth. The 23-year-old doubled to right to start the frame and scored on an infield single by Carr.

RHP Jason Ruffcorn (1-1) earned the win for the BlueClaws, tossing 1.2 innings in relief of RHP Jon Duplantier. Brooklyn RHP Cameron Foster’s (2-4) 16.0-inning streak without an earned run was snapped, suffering his fourth defeat of 2023.

The nightcap remained scoreless until the bottom of the third. DH Marcus Lee Sang sparked the rally for Jersey Shore with a ground-rule double to right-center. After taking third on a ground out, the Maryland native came home on a C Andrick Nava base-hit to put the BlueClaws ahead 1-0.

LF Wilfredo Flores singled and 3B Nick Ward was plunked before both crossed the plate on a 1B Rixon Wingrove double to right in the fourth, tripling the Jersey Shore edge to 3-0.

Wingrove capped the BlueClaws shutout with a two-run home run to right — his ninth of the year — following a walk to Ward in the sixth.

LHP Tristan Garnett (1-2) posted two spotless innings of relief in support of RHP Rodolfo Sánchez to take home his first win of the season for Jersey Shore. RHP Orion Kerkering recorded the game’s final five outs for his third save with the ‘Claws.

RHP Joander Suárez (1-4) permitted just two runs, but took home his fourth defeat for the Cyclones.

Brooklyn will try and snap the two-game slide on Thursday evening. RHP Jeffrey Colón (0-2, 7.28) projects to get the ball for the ‘Clones against the Shore’s LHP Matt Osterberg (1-2, 4.45). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
