Mets Transcript: Postgame Pool Report Q&A With Crew Chief Bill Miller on Drew Smith's ejection

Here is a transcript of the postgame Q&A with Crew Chief Bill Miller and a pool reporter:

Pool Reporter: Can you walk me through why Drew Smith was ejected?

Bill Miller: Drew Smith was ejected because he had sticky hands.

Pool Reporter: I guess it crossed the threshold?

Bill Miller: It did.

Pool Reporter: Do you know if it was rosin?

Bill Miller: I don't know what it was. I just know it was sticky.

Pool Reporter: You check a lot of hands, was his distinctly different than others?

Bill Miller: Distinctly. Yes.

Pool Reporter: What was he maintaining?

Bill Miller: He was maintaining it was rosin and sweat.

Pool Reporter: Could you tell if it was a foreign substance?

Bill Miller: I can't tell. All I know is whether or not, I don't know what's on his hand, all I know it was sticky, sticky to the touch. It stuck to my hands when I touched it. Not only his pitching hand, but his glove hand as well.

Pool Reporter: Was there anything in the glove?

Bill Miller: By that point in time I didn't check the glove.

Pool Reporter: So, I guess it's just, to an extent is it arbitrary of just what is [normal] sticky and what is too sticky?

Bill Miller: I think if something’s sticky, it’s illegal. They cannot manipulate the rosin. They can't use foreign substance. I don't know what was on his hand. But his hand was sticky to the touch, where my hand stuck to his hand.

Pool Reporter: Is this the stickiest one you’ve felt?

Bill Miller: For me? Yeah. And that's why he was ejected.

Pool Reporter: And that's all year? The stickiest one you felt?

Bill Miller: For me? Yes. And the crew as well. I had all three of my members touch the hands and they felt the same way.
