Joander Suárez tosses career-high 7.0 innings, but five-game win streak ends

WILMINGTON, Del. (July 8, 2023) — RHP Joander Suárez tossed a career-high seven innings and punched out a season-high-tying eight, but Brooklyn’s offense was limited to just three hits. The Cyclones’ five-game win streak was snapped with a 4-1 defeat to the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Saturday night at Frawley Stadium.

Scoreless into the bottom of the fourth, the Blue Rocks (5-9, 34-44) broke through first. SS Lucius Fox singled to right and advanced to second on a bunt knock by 2B Viandel Peña.

Following a fly out to left, DH Will Frizzell tapped a grounder to first, but the throw to second glanced off the shortstop’s mitt and into center field. Fox scored on the error, while Peña took third. RF Jeremy De La Rosa followed with a sacrifice fly to center, giving Wilmington a 2-0 lead.

Brooklyn (10-4, 38-41) pulled a run closer in the top of the sixth. LF Alex Ramírez reached on a dropped pop-up in the infield and consecutive walks to C Kevin Parada and SS William Lugo loaded the bases.

After a strikeout, DH Omar De Los Santos ripped a deep drive to center field. The 23-year-old came feet shy of a grand slam, settling for a sacrifice fly to pull the Cyclones within one, 2-1.

Wilmington scratched across their final two in the seventh. Frizzell coaxed a walk and moved into scoring position on a De La Rosa single to left. A pair of ground outs and a wild pitch enabled both to scamper home, extending the ‘Rocks lead to 4-1.

Suárez (3-6) was phenomenal in a quality start. The 23-year-old suffered his sixth loss but posted a career-high seven innings of work while striking out a season-best-matching eight. Suárez walked only two, while only two of the four runs he permitted were earned.

The Blue Rocks are projected to counter with RHP Kyle Luckham (2-1, 3.93) for the second time in the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
