Drake Osborn and Stanley Consuegra go deep in Brooklyn’s 6-3 defeat

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (August 4, 2023) — C Drake Osborn and RF Stanley Consuegra each powered solo home runs, but a five-run fifth inning from the BlueClaws was too much to overcome, as Jersey Shore defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones, 6-3, on Friday night at ShoreTown Ballpark.
Scoreless through four innings, Brooklyn (22-12, 50-49) broke through first in the top of the fifth. With the bases empty and one out, Osborn obliterated the first pitch he saw beyond the fence in left-center for a solo shot. The 24-year-old’s seventh home run of the season put the Cyclones in front 1-0.
2B D’Andre Smith immediately followed with a double to left and scooted to third on a ground out. SS Jett Williams dunked a soft fly ball into shallow left for a run-scoring single to push Brooklyn’s lead to 2-0.
The advantage did not last, however. CF Jared Carr singled to left to start the bottom of the fifth for Jersey Shore (17-17, 51-48) and C Anthony Quirion subsequently powered a towering game-tying, two-run home run to left-center field. The 25-year-old’s fourth blast of the year — and third against Brooklyn — tied the game at two.
DH Wilfredo Flores continued the rally with a single and advanced to second on 2B Nick Ward’s two-out knock to center. LF Marcus Lee Sang put the BlueClaws ahead with a two-run triple that split the gap in left-center field. A throwing error that careened into Brooklyn’s third-base dugout on the play allowed Lee Sang to cross home himself, providing Jersey Shore a 5-2 edge.
The Cyclones quickly grabbed a run back in the top of the sixth when Consuegra blasted a ball beyond the berm in left for a solo home run. The right-handed swinger’s team-leading 13th home run of the season pulled Brooklyn within two, 5-3.
Jersey Shore went back ahead by three, 6-3, in the seventh when Ward walked, stole second, and scored on another Lee Sang triple.
LHP Matt Osterberg (8-5) surrendered a pair of home runs but earned his eighth win of the year with 5.2 innings of three-run ball for the ‘Claws. RHP Konnor Ash collected the final three outs for his second South Atlantic League save.
‘Clones RHP Joander Suárez (3-9) was saddled with his third-straight defeat after yielding five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 4.1 innings.
Brooklyn looks to earn at least a series split in game five of the series on Saturday evening. RHP Cameron Foster (4-5, 4.44 ERA) is projected to take the hill for the Cyclones. LHP Rafael Marcano (4-6, 5.08 ERA) is slated to make the start for the BlueClaws. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m
