PRESS RELEASE: METS SIGN RHP FRANKIE MONTAS


 

FLUSHING, N.Y., December 4, 2024 – The New York Mets today announced that the club has signed RHP Frankie Montas to a two-year major league contract with a player opt out after the 2025 season.

 

"We are excited to bring Frankie into the organization and add a quality arm to our major league rotation," said President of Baseball Operations David Stearns. "Throughout his career, Frankie has flashed some of the best stuff in the game. He'll provide a stabilizing presence to our pitching staff and can contribute on and off the field."

 

The 6-2, 255-pounder combined to make 30 starts between the Cincinnati Reds and the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024. He posted a 7-11 record with a 4.84 ERA (81 ER/150.2 IP), 66 walks and 148 strikeouts. After joining the Brewers at the trade deadline, his strikeout rate improved from 19.0 to 28.7 percent. He finished with 70 strikeouts in 57.1 innings as a member of the Brewers. In 22 games started on five or more days of rest last year, Montas posted a 3.85 ERA, with a 1.214 WHIP and a .672 OPS.

 

In three of the last four years, Montas has thrown over 140.0 innings. Overall, he owns a record of 44-46 with a 4.09 ERA (338 ER/744.1 IP), 263 walks and 760 strikeouts over the course of nine major league seasons with the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Reds and Brewers.

 

In 2021, the right-handed pitcher finished sixth in the American League Cy Young ballot. In 32 starts with the Athletics, Montas went 13-9 with a 3.37 ERA (70 ER/187.0 IP), 57 walks and a career-best 207 punchouts.  

 

He was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Boston Red Sox in December of 2009.
