NY Post: Billy Wagner’s emotional Baseball Hall of Fame selection: ‘Felt like the clock stopped’. "Wagner received 82.5 percent of the tally from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, which allowed an exhale — and plenty of tears, as video showed — after he missed by just five votes last year."
SNY.TV: Former Met Billy Wagner elected to MLB Hall of Fame in final year on ballot. "In his 10th and final year on the ballot, former Mets closer Billy Wagner finally garnered enough votes to take his rightful place in Cooperstown in the National Baseball Hall of Fame."
Jay Horwitz Mets Insider Blog: The Hall of Fame Wait is Over for Billy Wagner. "At 5–9, he was supposed to be too short. He was a natural righty and broke his arm as a youngster and became a lefthander. When he started on the ballot 10 years ago, his percentage was as low as 10.2. Now he stands over 80 percent."
Bill Madden NY Daily News: Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia and Billy Wagner make up electric Hall of Fame trio. Full disclosure here: This was the first time I voted for Wagner...But as the years went on and Wagner began edging closer to the necessary 75% for election, nuggets of his dominance — my No. 1 criteria — began to emerge. He averaged 11.9 strikeouts per nine innings and held opponents to a .187 average for his career and both are all time records."
STATEMENT FROM STEVE & ALEX COHEN ON BILLY WAGNER EKECTED TO HALL OF FAME “Congratulations to Billy Wagner on baseball’s highest honor. He was a two-time All-Star during his four seasons in Queens and earned his 300th career save in a Mets uniform. Billy was one of the game’s dominate closers and will now be forever enshrined in the Hall of Fame.”

I used to see Billy Wagner sitting alone in the @Mets dugout watching the opposing team take BP. When I finally asked him why, he said that he was able to pick up what the hitters were working on so that he could exploit that during the game. Pretty smart. Congrats, Billy!

Terry Collins and the rest of our panel believe Carlos Beltrán is being unfairly punished for his role in the Astros sign-stealing scandal and that he deserves to be a Baseball Hall of Famer next season@sal_licata @TerryCollins_10 @AlbaneseLaura @AnthonyMcCarron pic.twitter.com/0dggzVSnyi

Danny Abriano SNY.TV: Mets' roster still needs serious reinforcements, even if truly answering Dodgers right now is impossible. "Meanwhile...[Pete] Alonso -- despite the Mets' current position regarding negotiations -- remains without a clear market as New York remains without a big bat to help protect Soto in their lineup. A reunion still makes tons of sense. Beyond that, the Mets should be looking to add an established arm or two to their bullpen and should be exploring what it might take to pry someone like Dylan Cease from the Padres."Carlos Beltrán received 70.3% of the vote in his third year on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot pic.twitter.com/cwHSXyvgJa

Lindsey Nelson, selected by the expansion Mets as the
team's lead announcer in 1962, reveals he will not be returning to the Mets
broadcast booth this season, ending a 17-year partnership with Ralph Kiner
and Bob Murphy. The colorfully clad Hall of Fame announcer, who will
eventually do play-by-play for the Giants, is replaced by Steve Albert, the
younger brother of the well-known NBA Knicks and NHL Rangers' broadcaster
Marv Albert. |

2001 |
Fifty-eight-year-old Tommie Agee, the 1966 American League
Rookie of the Year, dies of cardiac arrest in Manhattan. The World Series
standout made two memorable catches in center field at Shea Stadium (possibly
saving five runs) and homered in the Mets' 5-0 victory over the Orioles in
Game 3 of the 1969 Fall Classic. |
|
2008 |
The Mets and outfielder Endy Chavez agree on a $3.85
million, two-year deal. The 29-year-old Venezuelan, who missed most of last
season with a hamstring pull, will always be remembered in Mets lore for 'the
catch' in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS against the Cardinals. |
|
2010 |
The Mets, in need of a center fielder, until Carlos
Beltran returns to the lineup in early May, deal 30-year-old right-handed
reliever Brian Stokes (2-4, 3.97) to the Angels in exchange for the
highly-paid but under-achieving Gary Matthews Jr. (.250, 4, 50). Los Angeles
agrees to pay a significant portion of the slumping outfielder's $50 million
five-year contract that 'Little Sarge' signed three seasons ago with the
Halos. |

1996: The St. Louis Cardinals send
outfielder Bernard Gilkey to

exchange for pitchers Eric Ludwick, Erik Hiljus and Yudith Orozio.
2016: The Mets make a couple of moves to defend their National League pennant, re-signing free agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and adding reliever Antonio Bastardo. Cespedes, the star of the team's late surge in 2015, returns after protracted negotiations, signing for three years and $75 million, while the price tag for Bastardo is $12 million over two years.
2020 - News emerges that Luis Rojas, son of major league outfielder and
manager Felipe Alou and
brother of Moises Alou, will be
named manager of the Mets, in replacement of Carlos Beltran,
who was dismissed for his role the 2017 Astros sign-stealing scandal
before he could actually manage a game. Rojas has chosen to use his family's
true last name, which was erroneously changed to the matrimonial name when his
father became a professional ballplayer in the 1950s. In addition to belonging to baseball
royalty, Rojas has found a lot of success managing in the minor leagues and in
the Dominican Republic and
was a quality control coach with the Mets.
