"In a sign that they have begun preparing for life without Pete Alonso, the Mets told Brett Baty and Mark Vientos to begin working out at first base early in the new year, The Post has learned. Both players still remain viable at third base, but that Baty and Vientos were advised to begin a routine that included first base is an indicator of how the Mets plan to proceed unless there is a U-turn back to Alonso."

"McNeil produced at an anemic .216/.276/.314 clip before the All-Star break last season. After changing his approach — with an emphasis placed on driving the ball — McNeil began to surge before getting drilled by a pitch that fractured his right wrist in early September...A year earlier, McNeil owned a .251/.324/.324 slash line in early August before getting hot to more resemble the player who had won the National League batting title in 2022." NY Post: Mets take chance on former Cubs reliever Adbert Alzolay as he recovers from elbow surgery. "On Friday, the Mets signed right-hander Adbert Alzolay...to a two-year minor league contract...Alzolay underwent Tommy John surgery in late August and is expected to miss at least the bulk of the 2025 season. The 29-year-old spent his first six seasons with the Cubs, with whom he emerged as a solid, back-end reliever who saved 22 games and posted a 2.67 ERA in 2023."

1980: The Mets' new owners are formally introduced to the local media at Shea Stadium's Diamond Club. Nelson Doubleday will be the new chairman of the board, replacing the outgoing Lorinda de Roulet, who will play no role in the future of the franchise, and Fred Wilpon is named the president and CEO of the club.
1999: After being aired on WOR, Channel 9 since the team's inception in 1962, Mets games this season will broadcast by WPIX, Channel 11. The Yankees games, which had aired for nearly 50 years on the Amazins' new station, will now be seen on Channel 5, a Fox affiliate.
2005: Carlos Delgado (.269, 32, 99) and Florida come to terms on a four-year, $52 million contract. The 32 year-old first baseman's deal stops the intense bidding war between the Marlins, Mets, Orioles, and the Rangers for the coveted free agent.
2007: Willie Randolph, who brought New York within one game of a World Series appearance, agrees to a $5.65 million, three-year deal to continue as the manager of the Mets through 2008. The skipper's new deal doubles his present salary from $700,000 to $1.4 million.
