Mets News and Morning Links - 2/15/2025

Good Morning.  Happy Birthday today to Mark Canha and Luke Ritter.  Tylor Megill throws BP as he tries to make team plus Mark Vientos and Brandon Nimmo talk to the Press.

Mets Links:

NY Post: Tylor Megill in fight for Mets opening day roster spot — again. "This spring, he sits behind Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes, David Peterson and Griffin Canning in the apparent pecking order of a six-man rotation...Megill last season pitched to a 4.04 ERA in 16 appearances (15 of which were starts) for the Mets. His best work occurred over his final six starts for the team, after returning from Syracuse in August...'I threw a lot of strikes and started going deeper into games, which is good,' Megill said."

NY Post: Brandon Nimmo has eyes set on long view in plantar fasciitis recovery. "After abstaining from running for most of the offseason to allow his left foot a chance to heal from plantar fasciitis, the Mets outfielder said Friday that he is running at 91 percent as he continues his rehab...For the last three seasons, Nimmo has eased into spring training by skipping the first week or two of the Grapefruit League. It’s an approach he will continue this spring as he looks to stay healthy all season."

NY Post Sports+: Mark Vientos is focused on something bigger after his Mets breakout. "Mark Vientos didn’t need to be here this week, but he sent a positive message to the Mets by arriving before most of the other position players. He isn’t satisfied with the breakout season he had last year and is determined to maintain the work ethic that helped transform him into an important piece of the Mets lineup." (Subscription required)

Jon Heyman NY Post Sports+: Clay Holmes has all the ingredients to make Mets look like geniuses. "The Clay Holmes rotation experiment is no experiment at all. It’s a cold Mets calculation, yet another one I’m betting will work...Holmes is developing quite the pitch combo, and that drives this calculation. The man known for his 98-mph diving sinker somehow found a full slate of pitches while dabbling, experimenting and refining last year. He added a four-seam (straight) fastball and changeup in his final days as a Yankee, convincing him his ambition to start wasn’t fanciful. (subscription required)

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets' Edwin Diaz wants in on 2026 WBC — if team is OK with it. "In the 2023 iteration of the international tournament, he tore the patellar tendon in his right knee — while celebrating a win over the Dominican Republic, a major rival — and missed the entire season...Despite the bad memories, Diaz is raring to go again."

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Jose Butto relieved to know the Mets plan to keep him in the bullpen this season. "Whatever the role is, Butto is happy to play it, but after a year of uncertainty, the 26-year-old is just happy to know the plan early. “I feel good right now because last year I started, and I [went] back to relieving, but now they say that from the beginning, I’m a reliever,” Butto told the Daily News Friday at Clover Park. “I can start my routine from the beginning of spring training, I can more be comfortable, talk more with the guys.”

Mike Puma NY Post: Nick Madrigal comfortable jumping into unchartered waters with Mets. "The 27-year-old infielder — a former first-round draft pick by the White Sox — is expected to see action at shortstop in the exhibition season for the Mets as the team evaluates potential backup options for Francisco Lindor...But there is a strong possibility the Mets will carry only one backup infielder, and shortstop experience for that player would be a plus."

From National Pastime.com:

1961

Donald M. Grant, chairman and a minority owner of the Mets, offers Branch Rickey a contract to become the general manager of the new National League expansion team. After the former GM of the Browns, Cardinals, Dodgers, and Pirates turns down the job, George Weiss, who filled the same role with the Yankees from 1947 to 1960, accepts the position.

2001

After turning down the Mets' offer of salary arbitration that at the very least would have been worth $2 to $3 million, Bobby Jones signs a one-year free-agent deal with the Padres for only $625,000. The 31 year-old right-hander, 11-6 last year with New York, will lose 19 games for the Padres this season.

2016

"Baseball is known as our national pastime, but the game has deep roots and a rich history here in New York State. From the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in storied Cooperstown to the Mets and Yankees — the pinnacles of Major League Baseball, to our recently crowned Little League World Series champions from Maine-Endwell, New York State is clearly the epicenter of baseball greatness. It is time that we formally recognize baseball as our official state sport." - JAMES SEWARD, New York state senator.

New York State Sen. James Seward (R-Milford), thanks to a suggestion from a group of fourth-graders at Cooperstown Elementary School, announces he has introduced legislation (S.4288) to designate baseball as New York’s official state sport. In a press release, Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson says he "enthusiastically supports” the proposed bill, citing Cooperstown serves as the spiritual home of baseball.

Baseball Reference:

2011 - The Mets bring back a figure from the past, signing reliever Jason Isringhausen to a minor league deal coupled with an invitation to spring training. Isringhausen is attempting a comeback from Tommy John surgery at age 38. He was part of the Mets' vaunted "Big Three" in the mid-1990s along with Bill Pulsipher and Paul Wilson: the minor league standouts were supposed to anchor the Mets' pitching staff for the next decade, but all three fell victim to arm injuries, and none of them had much success in the Big Apple.
