NY Post: Brett Baty’s latest hot spring training start is different this time around. "He’s trying to keep everything as simple as possible. 'Honestly, I’m just focused on swinging at strikes and taking balls, in the simplest form,' Baty told The Post during the Mets’ 8-5 spring training loss to the Astros on Tuesday...He’s had a hot start to the spring, going 5-for-8 at the plate with a double along with his homer." 


Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Mets evaluating depth starters after losing Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea. "left-hander Brandon Waddell...gave up two unearned runs in an 8-5 loss to the Astros at Cacti Park. “We know is going to be around the strike zone and that’s what he did today,” Mendoza said. “He couldn’t put hitters away. He got ahead and then the ball was put in play and we didn’t make a play at first base. But overall, well-respected guy that’s going to attack the strike zone, and he’s going to use all of his pitches and going to give you a chance.”


Mike Puma NY Post Sports+: Mets’ eye-opening belief in Justin Hagenman could be rewarded in short order. "Justin Hagenman hasn’t spent a day in the big leagues, but that didn’t stop the Mets from offering him a major league contract this offseason...Hagenman doesn’t own a big fastball, but at 28 years old has what team officials consider a knowledge of pitching...among the starting rotation depth options in camp. That depth (which includes more familiar names such as Tylor Megill and Paul Blackburn) is already receiving scrutiny with two starting pitchers sidelined to begin the season." (subscription required)


NY Post: Mets’ A.J. Minter slightly ahead of schedule in slow return from hip surgery. "The lefty reliever, who arrived on a two-year contract worth $22 million, continues to throw bullpen sessions in camp, but is behind most of the other pitchers as somebody who is yet to face hitters in live batting practice...For now, Minter has sights on throwing “a handful” of additional bullpens before considering when he might advance to facing hitters in live batting practice."

NY Post: Healthy Edwin Diaz looks to regain 2022 dominance and fix one weakness. “Last year was a little bit different because I was recovering from an injury,” Díaz told The Post on Tuesday. “When I got here to spring training [last year], I wasn’t doing everything with the team. This year, I’ve been able to do everything, that’s something good. Physically, I feel great, ready to go.”


Joel Sherman NY Post Sports+: The top of this Mets lineup could be historic — there’s just one question. "So really the question will come down to if Alonso hits third — and for how long? I think his status will motivate Carlos Mendoza to bat him third because that also would be a vote of confidence from the manager to his first baseman after two straight down years. If this begins to morph into a third straight such season and Mark Vientos demonstrates that last year was not an aberration, how long will Mendoza’s leash be?" (subscription required)


Tim Healey Newsday: Mets' Tyler Zuber 'found my love for baseball again' during stint with Long Island Ducks. "Less than a year ago, when he was on the brink of quitting baseball altogether, he rediscovered his passion for the game — and revived his career — in an unlikely place: Long Island...Zuber, 29, is in the crowded bullpen picture, a candidate to contribute in relief this year, even if he doesn’t make the Opening Day roster. He throws a signature sweeping slider plus a recently developed changeup that “we really love,” pitching coach Jeremy Hefner said, as part of his four-pitch mix."
