SNY.TV/Yahoo Sports: Brett Baty and Ryan Clifford go yard, Clay Holmes terrific as Mets blank Astros. "Max Kranick was impressive in 2.0 perfect innings. His fastball topped out near 97 mph, and he punctuated his first inning by getting Quincy Hamilton to strike out swinging on a curve after an 11-pitch at-bat. In his second inning, Kranick got another strikeout -- sandwiched around a fly out and ground out. Kranick is transitioning from a starter to a multi-inning reliever, and has a chance to make the bullpen out of camp."
Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Mets Notebook: Pitchers working on controlling running game, Brett Baty’s hot spring continues. "Brett Baty hit his second home run of spring training Thursday, a two-run homer off right-hander Miguel Ullola. It was a line drive over the right field fence that went nearly 110 MPH off the bat, which was encouraging to the Mets."

SNY.TV/Yahoo Sports: Top prospect Brandon Sproat reflects on meeting Mets legend Dwight Gooden in camp. "It was incredible,” Sproat told MLB Pipeline's Jonathan Mayo on Thursday's MLB Tonight. “A guy of that caliber back in the day, I’ve heard so many stories of him. Just being able to pick his brain and see what he has to say, that’s special.”
Tim Healey Newsday: Mets' Brandon Sproat, who has never seen snow, prepping for cold of Syracuse (and Queens). "In a few weeks, he’ll head north with the Triple-A Mets, who will open the season in Massachusetts before playing in Syracuse...Hefner highlighted the tools available to stay warm and the physiological importance of doing so. In addition to heaters in the dugout, the Mets have oven mitt-shaped handwarmers and fanny pack-type handwarmers (like quarterbacks wear), both of which are battery-powered, offering some serious heat."
SI.com: Mets sign 10-year veteran José Ureña to minor league deal to help starting rotation. The New York Mets have signed José Ureña to a minor league deal. Ureña is a 10-year veteran who pitched to the tune of a 3.80 ERA for the Rangers last season.
Anthony DiComo Mets.com: Mets add Ureña on Minors deal for rotation depth (source). "With multiple injuries clawing at their rotation depth, the Mets made a small move to shore it up on Thursday, agreeing to terms on a Minor League contract with right-hander José Ureña. The Mets have not announced the deal, because it is pending a physical. A source confirmed the contract is worth $2 million if Ureña reaches the Majors...He still features one of the game’s harder fastballs, averaging 96 mph with that pitch, though his strikeout rate last year was one of the lowest in MLB."
Jon Heyman NY Post Sports+: How Mets are approaching their rotational woes as injuries mount. "If they don’t change their minds on Jose Quintana, whose metrics apparently don’t measure up to his 2024 numbers, or make a surprise trade for barely available Padres star Dylan Cease, they’ll need to find three starters from Tylor Megill, Griffin Canning, Paul Blackburn (coming off spine surgery) and perhaps new signee José Ureña, who’s on a minors deal. Top prospect Brandon Sproat is an uber talent but isn’t believed ready." (subscription required)
Anthony DiComo This unsung hero of Mets' coaching staff is 'a huge asset'. Longtime coach Rafael Fernandez 'will do whatever it takes to help the guys get better' "On any given day, he’s just as liable to be lugging equipment between fields as he is to be offering advice to multi-million dollar superstars. He’s there on the team plane, breaking down swings with Francisco Lindor. He’s there in the batting cage, helping Brandon Nimmo find his feel against lefties."
Mike Puma NY Post Sports+: Ronny Mauricio hasn’t lost his confidence in key tool after ‘difficult’ year. "Mauricio told The Post this week that he is running at roughly 80 percent following his January 2024 surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee...'I think the power is still there,' said Mauricio, who hit 23 homers in 116 games for Triple-A Syracuse in 2023. 'But when you get injured the way that I did, it takes a little longer. The rehab process takes longer, the strength to get back here takes a little bit longer. But I think when I do come back, I think I am going to be even that same power or even better.'" (subscription required)
NY Post Sports+: Juan Soto could be the key to unleashing the best in Pete Alonso. "Alonso, primarily the Mets’ cleanup hitter throughout his six-year career, has hit third in each of his three Grapefruit League games this spring. Beyond the number in the order, that more importantly means hitting behind Juan Soto, who has featured second in the order in each of his own three appearances in spring training games. After a career-worst 2024 season, perhaps hitting behind such a menacing hitter in Soto can help Alonso get back to his best." (subscription required)
