NY Post: Pete Alonso re-signs with Mets on two-year, $54 million contract to end free agency saga. "The deal, agreed to Wednesday night, was pending a physical and includes an opt-out after this season, so Alonso can hit the open market again if he puts up better numbers than he did in a subpar 2024...He’ll make $30 million this season, with a $24 million player option for 2026, as the Mets waited out Alonso, who couldn’t find a more lucrative deal elsewhere."
Tim Healey Newsday: Pete Alonso, Mets agree to two-year, $54 million contract, source says. "Their new deal seems to be a win-win — or a win-win-win, if you count the fan base...Alonso’s return means the Mets have clarity at first base — and, as a result, third base. Following his breakout season, Mark Vientos is now due to stay at third; in a post-Alonso world, the Mets could have moved Vientos across the diamond."
The Athletic: Analysis: Short-term deal good for Mets, motivation for Pete Alonso. "But by bringing Alonso back this way — and just two weeks ago, owner Steve Cohen called the negotiations exhausting — the Mets revealed that they’re not overly worried about him returning to the clubhouse with any potential negative energy. The way some Mets people see it, Alonso is a competitor and will be thoroughly motivated to perform at a high level. In their view, Alonso’s drive will outweigh any possible dissatisfaction." Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Pete Alonso agrees to return to Mets on 2-year, $54 million deal: reports. "A second-round draft pick out of the University of Florida in 2016, Alonso endeared himself to Mets fans immediately with his passion and enthusiasm. Alonso and his wife Haley cemented themselves as members of the community with various charity initiatives to support animals, veterans and kids. The goal of the Alonso foundation is to advocate for those who can’t always advocate for themselves."
NY Post: Pete Alonso decides to bet on himself with Mets contract after turning down longer deal. "The Mets had offered a three-year, $71 million deal as well to keep Alonso in Queens...The decision follows the tactics that other Scott Boras clients have followed, with Heyman pointing out that Blake Snell, Carlos Correa and Matt Chapman have all followed similar paths and have ended up with multi-year contracts the next year."
Joel Sherman NY Post Sports+: Mets’ short and sweet Pete Alonso deal is win for everyone — including the fans. "Less than a week before the Mets were to open camp with pitchers and catchers, they retained their slugging first baseman. They did it by being as patient in negotiations as Juan Soto is at the plate...Alonso’s victory is this — it is a huge payday for one year, that $30 million. The $27 million annual value ties the second-most ever given a first baseman, as Freddie Freeman is in the midst of a heavily deferred six-year, $162 million pact with the Dodgers."
