SNY.TV: Paul Blackburn fires four perfect innings, Francisco Lindor smacks RBI single as Mets beat Cardinals. A.J. Minter shined in his spring training debut.

NY Post: A.J. Minter’s first Mets appearance ‘checked a box’in Opening Day quest. “A.J. Minter isn’t prepared to declare himself ready for the Opening Day roster, but he took a significant step in that direction on Wednesday. The lefty reliever, who has taken it slow in camp after undergoing left hip surgery last season, pitched a perfect fifth inning against the Cardinals in his Grapefruit League debut. It was Minter’s first time facing hitters in a game since Aug. 11 of last year.”

Anthony DiComo Mets.com: 'I hate missing games': Minter logs perfect frame in Grapefruit League debut. Notes: Núñez's debut coming soon; Alvarez aiming to beat 6-to-8 week estimate. “In his spring debut at Roger Dean Stadium, Minter at least resembled his old self. Although he topped out at 93 mph, a tick or two below where he’d like to be on the radar gun, the left-hander flashed enough movement to tempt Alec Burleson into swinging at a cutter well off the plate. All told, Minter threw 10 pitches [8 strikes], striking out Burleson and inducing two weak groundouts.”

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets' Francisco Alvarez's hand surgery is 'hard for my mind'. “The Mets’ doctors told him he could start hitting after three weeks. Part of the rehab process, though, will be tolerating pain in his receiving hand. If he is comfortable enough as his recently broken hand takes a beating catching pitches every night, it might speed up a return.”

NY Post: Video of Mets star Juan Soto getting revenge on heckling fan goes viral. “While Soto was patrolling right field, a fan in a green shirt yelled “overpaid, overrated!” at the Mets’ new $765 million star, who stared back at the man in a viral video circulating on social media….That moment allegedly occurred before the bottom of the third inning, when Soto smashed the first pitch he saw over the fence — right at the same fan who was heckling him. The fan tried to catch the home run ball but failed and fell down to the ground…”

The Tigers and Mets swap relievers, with Detroit sending Ed Glynn to the Big Apple in exchange for Mardie Cornejo, who, after posting a 4-2 record as a rookie last season, will never play in another major league game. In contrast, the latest addition to the New York bullpen will make 84 appearances, compiling an ERA of 3.53 during the two years with his new club.

2001

Throwing 22 strikes out of 29 pitches over two innings of shutout ball in his surprise start against the Mets at Roger Dean Stadium, Rick Ankiel makes his first appearance since the 2000 playoffs, in which he lost his control, throwing seven wild pitches in three postseason appearances.

2006

Three pitches into the top of the seventh inning, the stadium lights at Tradition Field partially fail. With fifty percent of the lighting not functioning, the exhibition game ends, after a 15-minute delay, with the Mets leading the Nationals, 10-4.

Baseball Reference:

1969 - In addition to this year's lower mound and tightened strike zoneMajor League Baseball tries an experimental ball with 10% more resiliency for a spring training game between the Mets and Tigers in Lakeland, Florida. It has an all-rubber center instead of a cork and rubber core, and the seams are higher than the regular ball. Mets pitcher Don Cardwell surrenders three home runs in the 4th inning to Dick McAuliffeNorm Cash, and Gates Brown in the Tigers' 7 - 4 victory. Tomorrow, in Phoenix, Arizona, the same ball is used in the Giants' 13 - 1 win over the Angels, with Bobby Bonds hitting the only two homers off George Brunet. The players agree the ball is definitely livelier and sounds louder coming off the bat

2001 - At spring trainingSt. Louis Cardinals pitcher Rick Ankiel makes his first appearance since the 2000 playoffs in which he lost his control throwing seven wild pitches in three postseason appearances. Ankiel throws 22 strikes out of 29 pitches over two innings of shutout ball in his surprise start against the Mets, but his control problems will reappear within a short while.
