SNY.TV: Francisco Alvarez drives in run, Paul Blackburn struggles as Mets walked off by Nationals. "Paul Blackburn was knocked around for the second straight start. The right-hander worked around baserunners in each of his first two innings, but Washington struck in the third when CJ Abrams cracked an opposite-field solo shot and James Wood crushed a two-run homer."

Nationals walked it off after in the 9th when Ben Simon hit Riley Adams and then gave up a single to Nasim Nunez that Mets outfielder Travis Saggerty misplayed allowing Adams to score.  Daison Acosta, former Minor League Met lost in the 2023 Rule 5 Draft, got the win for Washington.

NY Post: Paul Blackburn still searching for spring results as he battles for Mets rotation spot. "The Mets righty pitched two scoreless innings before getting knocked around in his third, finishing with 2 ¹/₃ innings in which he allowed three runs on five hits...and two walks. Blackburn has been trying to hone a new sinker and sweeper. He felt good about his sinker until it “flattened out on me” during the three-run Nationals third..."

Nicolas Carreno now stateside working out on the backfields. Carreno came over in the Josh Walker trade from the Pirates . Carreno is not far from hitting triple digits ..

Today's Game:

6:40 PM at Miami; Mets: LHP David Peterson, RHP Reed Garrett, LHP Danny Young, RHP Kevin Herget, RHP Yacksel Ríos.

NY Post Sports+: Mets’ pitching lab reputation is turning them into a destination and helping them close important gap. "Two winters ago, Sean Manaea and Luis Severino signed short-term deals fresh off middling and awful seasons, respectively, and parlayed excellent seasons under Mets guidance into much larger pacts. Those success stories helped the Mets land Frankie Montas (who since has gone down with injury) and Clay Holmes, who both have acknowledged Manaea’s and Severino’s experiences in Queens helped sway them." (subscription required)

Jon Heyman NY Post Sports+: Why Mets just need to wait a little longer to see ‘the stuff’ from Brandon Sproat in majors. "The Mets love flame-throwing Brandon Sproat ...so much that they drafted him high twice, and scouts see a rotation star in the making, maybe even a legit top-of-the-rotation guy. But not quite yet...[Thursday night against Houston] Sproat progressed to three “ups” (pitching in a third inning), but a mixed Astros lineup hit him pretty hard in his second start Thursday under the lights, buttressing the view that time is needed. His five-pitch mix needs maturation, including the fastball shape he refines in bullpen sessions." (subscription required)

NY Post Sports+:Mets prospect Dom Hamel hopes copying the mechanics of two rivals opens the door to his MLB dream. "Rather than working on adding a new pitch, Dom Hamel spent the winter trying to develop a more consistent delivery.  His solution this offseason was found by watching a couple pitchers who are worth emulating. The Dodgers’ Yoshinobu Yamamoto and the Yankees’ Luke Weaver have deployed lesser knee raises that amount to side-steps. Hamel watched video of Yamamoto and listened to interviews of Weaver, who himself had retooled his delivery to feel more athletic." (subscription required)

Newsday: Doc Gooden: Mets still need a true No. 1 starter. "Obviously there are question marks there," Doc Gooden said Friday, speaking of the team's rotation, one that took additional hits recently with injuries to presumptive ace Sean Manaea and the newly-acquired Frankie Montas. "This isn't a knock on anybody, just my opinion, but I still think we need a No. 1 guy. I think to compete, you have to have a No. 1 guy because what happens is that the lineup gets you through the season, but once you get to the postseason, you're facing the other team's best pitchers."

1966

Before an intrasquad contest in St. Petersburg in a pregame ceremony, the Mets announce the election of their former manager Casey Stengel to the Hall of Fame. The 75 year-old 'Old Perfessor' benefitted from a new rule by the Baseball Writers Committee on Veterans that makes any manager, umpire, or executive past the age of 65 eligible to be elected to the Hall of Fame six months after retiring, bypassing the traditional five-year wait rule for players.

 Baseball Reference.com:

1966 - The Hall of Fame Special Veterans Committee waives one of its election rules and selects manager Casey Stengel as the newest member of the Hall. Stengel managed the New York Mets for much of the 1965 season before falling and breaking his hip. The injury ended the elderly Stengel's career. Given his age, the Veterans Committee decides to make him immediately eligible for Cooperstown.
