From the Mets 7 Cardinals 4 Post Game Notes - 4/20/2025 



Mets:

  • The Mets defeated the Cardinals, 7-4, completing a four-game sweep of the Redbirds.
  • The Mets 1-4 hitters each recorded at least one RBI for the first time in a game this season...Courtesy of Elias.
  • Move to 17-23 all-time on Easter.
  • Improve to 9-1 at home this year, tied for the second-best start to a season at home in franchise history (also: 10-0 in 2015 and 9-1 in 1986).

Francisco Lindor:

  • Hit a lead-off homer.
  • Hit an infield single in the seventh inning as a right-handed batter...It was his first hit from the right side this season, snapping an 0-13 skid.

Brandon Nimmo:

  • Hit a go-ahead single in the seventh inning to give the Mets a 4-3 lead...It was his first RBI in his last eight games and broke a streak of 31 at-bats without an RBI.

Clay Holmes:

  • Gave up one run over 6.0 innings...It was his longest outing of the season and it tied a career high (also: 6.0 IP on July 14, 2018 vs. Milwaukee with Pittsburgh).

 José Buttó:

  • Earned the win and pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.


Brian Joura Mets360: "Clay Holmes had his best game as a Met, pitching six innings for the first time. He allowed just one run in the game, one that wouldn’t have scored without a wild pitch. He lowered his ERA to 3.16 for the year. He left with a 3-1 lead but did not factor into the decision." 



NY Post: Juan Soto, Mets stars’ bats overcome bullpen slipup to complete four-game sweep of Cardinals. “On Sunday, they got another encouraging start from Clay Holmes and, after a rare slipup from the bullpen cost them the lead in the seventh, the lineup delivered again…Brandon Nimmo, who earlier in the game robbed a potential two-run homer in left, hit a go-ahead single in the bottom of the seventh before the Mets added three more runs in the eighth…The rally in the eighth was capped by a Juan Soto two-run double to left-center, one of several signs over the past few days that Soto and the Mets believe he’s ready to break out after a slow start to his Queens tenure.” 



NY Post: Francisco Alvarez, Jeff McNeil will be reevaluated by Mets on Monday. “Francisco Alvarez and Jeff McNeil both played minor league rehab games Sunday and are due to be at Citi Field on Monday to be reevaluated. After that, they are likely to continue to get minor league at-bats before returning to the Mets, according to Carlos Mendoza….Mendoza said Alvarez might get some at-bats at Triple-A Syracuse to make sure his timing is right at the plate.”  



Tim Healey Newsday Mets OF Brandon Nimmo's big day leads club to 4-game sweep of Cardinals. “In the top of the sixth, [Nimmo] made a leaping catch at the leftfield wall, robbing the Cardinals’ Jordan Walker of a home run and ending Holmes’ best outing yet on a high note. In the bottom of the seventh, with the Mets in a freshly tied 3-3 game, Nimmo sent a ground ball hard up the middle for the go-ahead hit against former Mets reliever Phil Maton.”

Brian Joura Mets360: "Starling Marte cracked a three-run homer in the sixth inning to break up a 2-2 tie and send the Mets on their way to a 6-4 win over the Dodgers Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles. It was the Mets’ sixth consecutive win and gives the Mets the series win, with a chance to sweep on Sunday."


NY Post: "Marte walked to the plate in a 2-2 game in the sixth and smashed reliever Ryan Brasier’s second pitch, a slider, over the center-field fence for a three-run homer. The blast was Marte’s fourth this season, second on the team to Pete Alonso’s six."


Mets.com: "...when Ohtani approached home plate in the eighth inning Saturday as the game’s potential tying run, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza pushed a button he had yet to touch all season: he called on Edwin Díaz before the ninth. The result was not Díaz’s smoothest effort. But the Mets closer did just enough during the eighth inning of a 6-4 win over the Dodgers, striking out Teoscar Hernández and Max Muncy to strand the bases loaded."


Tim Healy Newsday: "The most fun piece of Saturday for Marte, according to Marte: manufacturing a run in the eighth inning. He reached on Mookie Betts’ throwing error, Marte’s speed perhaps impacting the defensively iffy converted outfielder. Then Marte stole second and scored on Francisco Lindor’s single."

SNY.TV: Kodai Senga working to adjust, give Mets longer outings following win vs. Giants."'I was hoping to get deeper into the game'. In the series opener against the Giants. Senga went five innings, which is respectable and good enough to pick up the win and improve to 3-0 in the season, but he was in line to go much further. "That happened in the 8th inning with Dom Smith at the plate as the tying run as the Mets crept to within 5-2 after scratching out runs on a Starling Marte single in the 7th and a Mark Canha single in the 8th off a struggling Taylor Rogers...Smith hit a seed that was labeled for the outfield that instead landed in Flores’ glove and that was that."

Taijuan Walker and manager Luis Rojas were both tossed for complaining about plate umpire John Libka’s strike zone. Walker’s ejection occurred after he had been pulled from the game. Rojas’ heave-ho, which came later, was the first of his major league managerial career.” 


Brian Joura Mets360: “The Mets loaded the bases in the ninth inning but could not complete the comeback…Two walks surrounding an out brought Luis Guillorme up as a pinch-hitter and he promptly singled to load the bases…But Brandon Nimmo struck out for the third time and Francisco Lindor hit a weak groundout to end the game”.

Yoenis Cespedes’ RBI single brought in Gsellman before Asdrubal Cabrera’s double gave the Mets a cushion."

NY Post: Mets blast 2 HRs but can’t get big hit in 11-inning loss to Phils. "They got back-to-back homers from Yoenis Cespedes and Lucas Duda in the fifth, but the Cespedes fanned in a bad at-bat to strand Curtis Granderson on second in the top of the 11th. Hansel Robles (L,0-1) took the loss in the bottom of the frame in front of 20,057 at Citizens Bank Park. In the bottom of the 11th, Robles allowed Freddy Galvis’ leadoff double to right, then uncorked a wild pitch to put the shortstop on third with nobody out. Speedy Peter Bourjos beat out a two-out infield hit — despite David Wright’s strong throw from deep behind third — to score Galvis with the winning run."


NY Daily News: "The Mets went 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position, including i the top of the 11th when Curtis Granderson drew a walk and then tagged up and advanced on Wright's long fly ball to center.  Cespedes and Michael Conforto struck out with him standing at second."


Mets starter Bartolo Colon went 6 innings, 3 runs, 3 ER, 4 hits, 1 HR, 1 walk, 4 Ks.

National Pastime.com: Appearing as a pinch hitter at Petco Park, Julio Franco becomes the oldest major leaguer to hit a home run. The 47 years, 240 days old's eighth-inning blast, which put the Mets ahead in their 7-2 victory over the Padres, surpasses Jack Quinn, who accomplished the feat as a pitcher for the Philadelphia A's at the age of 46 years, 357 days. 




At Petco Park in his first at-bat of the season, Kaz Matsui hits an inside-the-park round-tripper, making it the third successive season in which the Mets second baseman has hit a home run in his initial plate appearance of the year. Ken Griffey Jr. also accomplished the feat starting in 1997 with the Mariners but had walked before going deep.

After shutting out the Fish on his last start, Aaron Heilman (L,1-2) came back to earth - 4 innings, 7 runs, 7 ER, 11 hits, 1 HR, 1 walk, 3 Ks.  Victor Diaz tripled in a run and later scored on a Jose Reyes ground out for the Mets offense.  Josh Beckett allowed just those two runs on four total hits in 7 innings.

Mike Piazza singled in Kaz Matsui in the 1st but that was all the runs the Mets would get as they only managed 2 hits the rest of the game.  Al Leiter went 7 innings with just 1 run allowed.  A Jose Vidro homer off David Weathers in the 8th was the difference.

Down 4-3 in the 7th, the Mets scored 5 in the 7th to defeat the Marlins 7-4.  Mo Vaughn who committed two errors on the night, including one in the 6th that allowed the Marlins to take the lead, had a the biggest blow in the 7th - a bases load single to drive in two.  Tom Glavine (W,3-1) went 7 innings - 3 runs - all earned on 8 hits, 1 HR, 2 walks, 1 K for the win.

National Pastime.com: In the second game of a doubleheader, the Cubs stop their season-opening losing skid at 14 games, beating the Mets, 4-3. By losing the opener, Chicago set a National League record (0-14) for the most consecutive losses to start a season and has the second-worst record behind the Orioles, who lost 21 decisions before winning a game in 1988.

The 22 year-old rookie, who will become known as the 'Franchise,' goes 7.2 innings, giving up eight hits and one run in the Shea Stadium contest. 


Tommy Davis was the hitting star of the game for the Mets with a solo HR and a double.

Warren Spahn (W,1-0) gets his first Mets win as he wins a pitching duel against Claude Osteen.  Mets break through a scoreless tie on a suicide squeeze by Roy McMillan.  Johnny Lewis' pinch hit bases loaded single plates two more in the 9th.  The first 4 batters all reach against Spahn in the bottom of the 9th, tying run at 3rd. Spahn shut the door striking out Jim Lebvre, getting Tommy Davis out at home when Ron Fairly hit a comebacker to the mound and striking out John Kennedy to preserve the win.
