Mets beat Phillies for their 6th straight win. Griffin Canning gets his 3rd win, Mark Vientos doubles in a run in the 1st, Francisco Lindor singled one in the 2nd and the Mets put the game away with 3 in the 7th highlighted by Luis Torrens 2-run single.
NY Post: "But as the weather changes and the sample size grows, there have been no signs yet of the Mets pitching staff giving in to the whims of a long season: Their hot start only got hotter. The best pitching staff in baseball continued its excellence. An offense that has done enough did enough and did its best work in the clutch."
2025 was a good reminder that Baseball is a marathon. You can ride high in April, only to get shot down in May... or June...or October.
From the Mets 5 Phillies 1 Post Game Notes - 4/22/2025
Griffin Canning: Gave up one run, seven hits, one walk, and struck out five over 5.0 innings...He is now 3-1 with a 3.12 ERA (9 ER/26.0 IP) through his first five starts with the Mets...The Mets are the only team in the majors so far this season to have three pitchers with three wins (also: Tylor Megill and Kodai Senga).
Francisco Lindor (3-5, RBI, R): Hit an RBI single in the second inning to give the Mets a 2-1 lead...Picked up his fourth three-hit game of the season, tied for the second-most such games this season.
Mark Vientos (1-3, 2B, RBI, R): Hit an RBI double down the left field line in the first inning to give the Mets a 1-0 lead...Has six RBI, one home run and three doubles in his last seven games...Had just two extra-base hits and one RBI in his first 14 games of the season.
Pete Alonso (2-3, 2B, RBI, R, HBP): Singled in the third inning to extend his hitting streak to five games...Hit his 10th double of the season, an RBI shot to left field.
Luis Torrens (1-4, 2 RBI): Lined a two-run single to left field in the seventh inning to increase the Mets lead to 5-1.

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets' Jeff McNeil boots one, and it becomes key moment in loss to Giants.
NY Post: Mets bats stay ice-cold for first losing streak since 0-5 start "Nick Ahmed’s two-run single in the second gave the Giants a 2-0 lead. The inning started with Jeff McNeil literally booting Jorge Soler’s grounder — the Mets second baseman kicked the ball (it was ruled a hit) — before Michael Conforto singled and Thairo Estrada walked to load the bases."
Kiner's Korner: Giants Squash Mets: "Keaton Winn stymied the Mets on four hits in six innings. The Giants scored twice apiece in the second and third as San Francisco built a four-run lead. He allowed only a Pete Alonso home run."

Brian Joura Mets360: "David Peterson got the start and once again failed to deliver the goods. He allowed four runs in the first inning, three of them on a homer to Brandon Crawford. And if that wasn’t bad enough, he gave up two more runs in the second. And to complete the spit sandwich, Peterson served up a gopher ball in the fifth to Wilmer Flores."
Mike Puma NY Post: Brandon Nimmo’s sizzling road trip continued with a homer in the third inning that sliced the Giants’ lead to 6-2. The blast was the second in four games for Nimmo, who entered play with a .525/.568/.725 slash line over his previous nine games.
Metstradamus: "Combine that with every single close play and close replay going against the Mets (correctly, but still frustrating) and an eighth inning rally falling just short with Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso retired with the tying run on deck, and you have a 7-4 loss."

NY Post: Mets bail out Edwin Diaz, bullpen in 10-inning win over Diamondbacks. "Diaz left a slider over the plate that Daulton Varsho clubbed over the right-field fence. Tie game. Blown save. More questions about the Mets bullpen...Starling Marte’s speed let everybody off the hook. The Mets outfielder legged out an infield single in the 10th inning that allowed ghost runner Jeff McNeil to score the go-ahead run in a 6-5 victory over the Diamondbacks at Chase Field."
Brian Joura Mets360: "The Mets’ speed proved more deadly than the Diamondbacks’ power, as they survived losing a 4-run lead before winning in extra innings, 6-5, in the opener Friday night in Arizona."

SNY.TV: "Joey Lucchesi looked strong out of the gates, retiring the first six Cubs he faced including four punchouts. After striking out David Bote to start the third, Lucchesi lost some command, walking Jake Marisnick and pitcher Trevor Williams. With two outs in the inning, Willson Contreras singled on a ball that came back and hit Lucchesi and careened away to score the first run of the game. Kris Bryant then came up with a big hit, a two-run double to left-center to make it a 3-0 game…"
Mike Puma NY Post: “Alonso’s second homer in as many nights sliced the Mets’ deficit to 3-2 in the fourth. After Smith doubled leading off the inning, Alonso blasted a 413-foot shot to left field for his team-leading fourth homer.”
Ken Daviodoff NY Post: “After tying this game…the Mets couldn’t plate any more runs, emblematic of their young season. Not even when their placed base-runner Kevin Pillar advanced to third base with no outs in the 10th, pinch-hitter Jeff McNeil chasing several pitches out of the zone to strike out, nor when they loaded the bases with one out, Dominic Smith grounding into a double play.”
Anthony DiComo Mets.com: ”After Edwin DÃaz pitched a scoreless ninth to send the game to extras, the Mets had little choice but to entrust him with the 10th as well...he has historically been less effective with men on base in his career…Opposing hitters vs. DÃaz: …with the bases empty: .188/.274/.324…with men on base: .223/.300/.366…with a man on second and no outs: .313/.353/.375”
Justin Heyward singled in the Cubs winning run after the bases were loaded.
Steven Matz (W,2-1) allowed just 1 run on 3 hits over 6 innings, Jeff McNeil hit a solo HR and Pete Alonso drove in 2 to lead the Mets over the Phillies.
NY Post: Steven Matz delivers outing he and Mets desperately needed. "Facing the same Phillies team that scored eight runs off of him in the first inning without Matz recording an out in his previous outing, the left-hander looked like a different pitcher, as Matz bounced back and tossed six excellent innings in Monday’s 5-1 win."

NY Post: "Granderson’s second homer of the game — a solo shot with two outs in the fourth — extended the Mets’ lead to 5-2. The blast gave Granderson 19 multi-homer games for his career. It was also the Mets’ 21st homer in their last seven games, their highest total over any such stretch in franchise history."

He is batting .116 overall with a homer and five RBIs, but his problems are more pronounced at home, where he’s 4-for-45 (.089). Granderson struck out once and has whiffed eight times in his last five games...Dillon Gee (1-1) gave the Mets a chance by allowing two earned runs over six innings in which he allowed six hits and walked two...Wainwright...was close to untouchable, allowing just four hits over seven shutout innings before leaving the game with a hyperextended right knee."

NY Post: "The only run Martinez gave up was on Mike Piazza’s solo homer in the second inning. For the night, Martinez fanned eight of the nine spots in the order at least once, with just the four-hole (Piazza) managing to avoid a strikeout. After he allowed two runs in the first, he loaded the bases in the second before whiffing Jeff Bagwell on a 69 mph curve to end the frame. Still, he was replaced by Jae Seo (four earned runs, five innings) in the third...The Mets trailed 5-0 in the fourth when Piazza and Burnitz pieced together doubles to plate a run, and Piazza hit his third homer in the ninth..."

Mardie Conejo (W,3-0) only pitched one year in the Majors - and it wasn't even the full season but in 1978 he was solid for the Mets in April, May and September. After RBI singles by Ron Hodges and Tom Grieve in the top of the 7th tied the game, Mardie threw a scoreless 7th. Then, when Ron Hodges singled in Willie Montanez in the 8th, Mardie earned the victory as Skip Lockwood threw two scoreless for the win.
