From the Mets 4 Phillies 3 Post Game Notes - 4/23/2025

Max KranickEarned his second win of the season after stranding an inherited runner in the 10th inning to keep the score at 3-2...Marked his first walk of the season after not allowing a walk to his first 55 batters faced...He has stranded nine of 10 inherited runners this season.

Brian Joura Mets360: "It was too much Logan Webb, as the Giants righty shut out the Mets for eight innings in a 5-1 victory for the Giants Tuesday night in San Francisco. The loss snaps the Mets’ streak of winning five straight series and puts them on a three-game losing streak."

Kiner's Korner: Logan Webb Grounds Mets' Offense In 5-1 Loss. "Luis Severino retired the first 12 batters to face him before running into trouble in the fifth inning...Former Met Michael Conforto broke up Severino's perfect game in the fifth with a pop fly single...Conforto would come around to score the game's first run and is now 4 for 8 with three runs scored in the series."

SNY.TV: Mets' Luis Severino victim of bad luck in loss to Giants. "Severino pitched six innings, giving up three runs, and five hits while striking out five. But that's all Webb and the Giants needed as the Mets could only muster one run."

NY Post: Mets dominated by Giants ace Logan Webb as losing streak hits three. "Suddenly, a road trip that began with so much promise for the Mets — with two straight victories over the Dodgers — is in jeopardy of turning into a disappointment. The Mets need a victory in Wednesday’s series finale to salvage a .500 trip."

Tim Healey Newsday: "They lost to the Giants, 5-1, on Tuesday after scoring their only run in the ninth inning. In their teamwide mini-slump, they have three runs in 28 innings going back to Saturday...Against Webb, a righthander, Mendoza tried to put a platoon advantage in the Mets’ favor by stacking the lineup with seven lefthanded batters, including all of the bottom five (and switch hitter Francisco Lindor). It did not work."

    Mike Puma NY Post: Mets can’t overcome Tylor Megill’s dud in second straight loss to Giants. Tylor Megill followed an ugly David Peterson start a day earlier with his own clunker on Sunday and the Mets stalled offensively in a 5-4 loss to the Giants at Oracle Park...Megill scuffled through four innings in which he allowed four earned runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts...The right-hander departed after 81 pitches in what was his shortest and least-effective start of the season.

    Brian Joura Mets360: "Jeff Brigham threw two scoreless innings and Brooks Raley turned in his ninth straight game without allowing a run...[Francisco] Alvarez tied the game in the sixth inning with a solo homer, the first time this year a Met catcher delivered an extra-base hit."

    Tim Healey Newsday: The game-deciding play came in the bottom of the eighth when Joc Pederson walked and Drew Smith allowed Mike Yastrzemski’s go-ahead double, a line drive into the right-centerfield gap. Brandon Nimmo cut it off and threw the ball in, but the relay throw was not nearly in time.

    Brian Joura Mets360: "If you like crisp baseball and you missed this game, consider yourself fortunate. In a game where not much was expected because the Mets were throwing Trevor Williams into an impossible situation, the Mets failed to reach even those modest goals, as they fell to the Diamondbacks, 5-2, Saturday night in Arizona."

    Metstradamus: "...the Mets did everything they could to climb back into it. They scored two runs in the 5th to make it 4-2 on RBI hits by Jeff McNeil and Tomas Nido....Robinson Cano reached on a 15 foot single in front of the plate. Then he went to second on a wild pitch before McNeil hit one up the middle. For some reason, Cano sauntered back towards second and right into the ball for an out."

    Baseball Reference: The Mets tie a team record with their 11th straight win, 6 - 3 over the Braves. Daniel Murphy drives in 4 runs as Bartolo Colon is the winner over Julio Teheran.

    Mike Puma NY Post: Unstoppable Mets finish historic homestand with 11th straight win. "In an ugly game Thursday, the Mets used eight walks against five Braves pitchers to complete the three-game sweep. Murphy led the charge with four RBIs in a 2-for-3 performance. Bartolo Colon (4-0) lasted six innings, battling a blister on his middle finger, and allowed three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. His final act was stepping off the rubber in the sixth and chasing down A.J. Pierzynski, who was caught off first base. Colon applied the tag for the third out. Only fittingly, the Mets scored the go-ahead run in the fifth on a walk. Curtis Granderson singled leading off the inning and two walks and two outs later, Eric Campbell took ball four to give the Mets a 4-3 lead. Michael Cuddyer and Murphy each added an RBI in the Mets’ two-run seventh."

    Cards out hit the Mets 11-5 but the team from Flushing came out on top.  Two bases loaded walks and a solo Homer from Lucas Duda supported Jonathan Niese (W,1-2) who allowed just 1 run over 6.2 innings.

    Year: 2013; Game #18; Tuesday;  Apr 23, NYM 2  Vs. LAD; 7; boxscore;  WP: Belisario; LP: Lyon; Time: 03:36; NIGHT; Attendance: 21,135; Record: 9-9; Standings: 2; Games up/behind: 5; L;

    Mike Puma NY Post: Mets lose Niese, game to Dodgers. "That’s one tough Mark to erase. Between the bruise Mark Ellis planted on Jon Niese’s right leg and the damage the Dodgers second baseman inflicted upon Robert Carson and Brandon Lyon (L1-1), the Mets couldn’t escape Citi Field fast enough last night. Ellis knocked out Niese with a comebacker and then pummeled an entire team with two home runs and four RBIs in the Mets’ 7-2 loss to the Dodgers...Clayton Kershaw was sloppy for the Dodgers, lasting only five innings in which he allowed two earned runs on three hits and four walks, but the Mets couldn’t deliver the knockout punch. Daniel Murphy and David Wright each stroked an RBI single in the third, but the Mets left the bases loaded."

    NY Post: "Miguel Batista was flat as a spot starter in the opener and Dillon Gee a mess in the nightcap as the Mets lost 6-1 and 7-2 and fell to .500 for the first time this season, after opening with four straight victories....Ike Davis stranded 11 runners over the two games and three times left the bases loaded. That included a pinch-hitting appearance in the eighth inning of the nightcap, when he was caught looking at strike three against reliever Clay Hensley."

    Year: 2010; Game #17; Friday;  Apr 23, NYM 5  Vs. ATL; 2; boxscore;  WP: Takahashi; LP: Kawakami;  Save: Rodriguez; Time: 03:02; NIGHT; Attendance: 32,265; Record: 8-9; Standings: 5; Games up/behind: 2.5; W;

    Baseball Reference: The Mets beat the Braves, 5 - 2, as Ike Davis hits his first major league home run. There is an unusual play in the 7th inning: with the Mets leading 3 - 2 with two runners on base, Jose Reyes hits a high pop-up and the umpires invoke the infield fly rule. But 3B Chipper Jones crosses in front of SS Omar Infante in the windy conditions, and the ball glances off his glove and falls to the ground. C Brian McCann picks up the ball, and not realizing that Reyes is out automatically, goes after him. He relays the ball to 1B Eric Hinske, who tags both Reyes and the bag to no avail. While the Braves are busy flogging a dead horse, Angel Pagan races around the diamond for the Mets' fourth run. Nippon Pro Baseball veteran Hisanori Takahashi replaces starter John Maine, who has to leave in the 4th inning with pain in his left elbow; he strikes out seven in three innings to pick up his first major league win.

    NY Daily News: Victor and Mets slammed. Zambrano "gave up a first-inning solo homer to Josh Barfield and a fourth-inning grand slam to Brian Giles. He lasted just four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks, as his ERA rose to 9.64."

    Year: 2005; Game #18; Saturday;  Apr 23, NYM 10  Vs. WSN; 5; boxscore;  WP: Seo; LP: Ohka; Time: 03:24; DAY; Attendance: 44,058; Record: 10-8; Standings: 2; Games up/behind: 1; W;

    NY Post: Highs and Seos, Mets take advantage of Nationals Disaster.  "Seo made an emergency start because the scheduled starter, Kaz Ishii, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained lat muscle...Changeups and off-speed deception were the weapons of choice as Seo went an impressive six innings and allowed one run and six hits against Washington (9-9). He didn’t walk a batter, struck out four and landed 55 of his 79 pitches for strikes. Seo even chipped in with a career-high two RBIs in the rout...Cliff Floyd (2-for-4) extended his hitting streak to 10 games and scored two runs, beginning each rally in the fourth and fifth with a leadoff single. Beltran went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two walks. Victor Diaz (4-for-4) knocked in three runs, hit two doubles, walked and raised his average to .362 on the season."

He outdueled Houston ace Roy Oswalt (2-2) over six innings before David Weathers and Armando Benitez held off the Astros...[Raul] Gonzalez, hitting .383 with 12 RBIs at Triple-A Norfolk, smashed the second pitch he saw from Oswalt for a solo homer. Gonzalez led off the second inning with a 385-foot shot to left-center, pushing the Mets’ lead to 2-0."

St. Louis starter Matt Morris (4-1) served up a first-pitch fastball that Wilson pulled into left field to score Jay Payton and break a 3-3 tie...D’Amico went 71/3 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. NY Post: HOW METS HOOKED 1ST THEIR FIRST WIN. "Jay Hook pitched the Mets to their biggest win on April 23, 1962. It was their first, and without a first it would have been impossible to get a second....Manager Casey Stengel had no reason to give Jay the hook and he pitched a complete-game five-hitter, beating the Pirates, 9-1, at Forbes Field. The hitting tips Hook received from Rogers Hornsby in spring training came in handy. Hook had two hits and drove in two runs, including the go-ahead run."
