Tim Healey Newsday: Mets beat Cubs thanks to DJ Stewart's three-run home run. "The Mets were sleepwalking through another chilly night at Citi Field when the Cubs did them a minor favor, lifting righthander Javier Assad after five innings (one run) and 78 pitches. In came Adbert Alzolay from the bullpen. After Dansby Swanson’s throwing error helped bring Stewart to the plate with two out and two on, Alzolay left a cutter over the heart of the plate. Stewart loitered at the plate for a moment to watch it fly, then looked into the Mets’ dugout as he trotted to first...'Mendy tells me every single day to smile,' he said. 'So I was really just smiling at him when I hit that.'”

Brian Joura Mets360: "Sean Manaea got the start and was a frustrating mix of swing-and-miss stuff, combined with an inability to consistently throw strikes...An ultra-high pitch count in the first three innings kept him to just five frames."

NY Post: Taijuan Walker’s strong start in return a silver lining for Mets. "The 2021 All-Star hurled five shutout innings in a 4-1 loss to the Phillies, his first start in nearly three weeks."

Smith whirled and yelled back at Alvarado as both benches and bullpens cleared, leading to a brief fracas that did not escalate to a physical confrontation.”


Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: “Luis Rojas said Alvarado was instigating a fight. The Phillies left-hander drilled Jeff McNeil on his arm to leadoff the eighth, then intentionally walked J.D. Davis to face Smith for the final out of the inning. Rojas said Alvarado was out of line.”


Metstradamus: “Now yes, I think somebody should have popped Alvarado one and shut him up.”


Brian Joura Mets360: Maybe the way for the Mets to bust out of their doldrums is to get in a fight and throw some punches. Of course, if they tried that now, they’d probably swing and miss. (Subscription required).

Daniel Zamora was summoned and walked Joey Votto to load the bases before Drew Gagnon got the final out by striking out Eugenio Suarez...Alonso’s sacrifice fly to deep right won it, after Davis had grinded a 10-pitch at-bat and doubled. McNeil’s ensuing single, for his fourth hit of the game, put runners on the corners with nobody out against Raisel Iglesias."

He joins Walker Cooper as the only two players ever to have 6 hits and 10 RBIs in one game. Bryce Harper scores 4 runs to give 32 in April, a new major league record, and Matt Wieters has a pair of homers among his three hits. It is the most runs in franchise history for Washington. Worse for New York, Noah Syndergaard leaves the game in the 2nd after experiencing arm pain.


Mets360: "Syndergaard, who should not have started, left with an injury. The team got shellacked for 23 runs and any good morale built from Friday’s and Saturday’s victories is gone."

"Flores’ sixth error of the season sent Jacob deGrom’s night in the wrong direction and helped doom the Mets to their third straight loss, 8-2 to the Nationals at Citi Field. The defeat was the Mets’ first in 11 home games this season...DeGrom (L,2-3) had a second straight shaky outing, lasting just 5¹/₃ innings in which he allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. The right-hander allowed three home runs at Yankee Stadium last Friday and was the losing pitcher...Kevin Plawecki’s RBI double in the second gave the Mets a 1-0 lead before Curtis Granderson delivered a run-scoring single. He gave up three runs in the inning — two of them coming on a blast into the left-field seats by Matt Downs....Norris sailed through six shutout innings, but stumbled in the seventh. Nieuwenhuis delivered the big hit for the Mets, a two-run single with two outs, making it 3-3...Dickey lasted six innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts for his first no-decision of the season."


National Pastime.com: When Brett Myers faces his first batter in the ninth inning, the Astros closer becomes the seventh different Houston pitcher to face seven consecutive Mets, a major league first. Houston manager Brad Mills wears out a path from the dugout to the mound when he pulls starter Bud Norris from the game and then proceeds to summon Wilton Lopez, Wesley Wright, Brandon Lyon, Fernando Abad, and Fernando Rodriguez, to face one batter each in the team's 4-3 victory at Citi Field.

New York files a protest after the game is called off in the bottom of the eighth, claiming the field became unplayable due to Washington's inability to cover the field during the 37-minute stoppage of play. 


NY Post: Washed Away - Mets to Protest Rain-Soaked Win. "For the Mets, it was the fourth straight setback, pending the outcome of the protest. After beginning the month by starting 0-5, the Mets ended it last night by dropping their fourth straight game. And the Mets’ effort wasn’t much better than the Washington grounds crew. The Mets got bad starting pitching (Victor Zambrano), poor relief pitching (Manny Aybar) and shoddy hitting (two hits, no runs through seven innings)."

"In a demoralizing defeat to kick off their San Diego series, the Mets coughed up a five-run, first-inning lead and dropped a 7-6 decision to the Padres...Handed a 5-0 lead after one inning, Tyler Yates could not protect prosperity and lasted just 41/3 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned)...In the first inning, the Mets executed perfectly, racking up five hits as all eight position players either scored or drove in a run. Eric Valent had the key hit, a bases-loaded two-run double."

The franchise cornerstone smashed two mammoth homers in his first two at-bats, pacing the way for the Mets’ 10-1 laugher over the Diamondbacks."


National Pastime.com: Al Leiter becomes the first pitcher in baseball history to record wins over all thirty big league franchises that have been existence since 1901. The Mets southpaw earns the victory as New York routs the Diamondbacks at Bank One Ballpark, 10-1.

Mets scored 10 against the Dodgers on home runs by Bobby Bonilla, Todd Hundley and Jeromy Burnitz but it wasn't enough.  Leading 10-5 in the 8th, Josias Manzanillo allowed 6 runs to go up 11-10 in the eventual 12-10 win.

This was loss #17 in the Anthony Young 27 game loss streak, but like a lot of them, he didn't pitch that bad.  Mets led 5 to 3 in the 7th when the Padres rallied for 3 in the bottom of the seventh pf Mets Pitchers Mike Draper and Mike Maddux - two of the runs scoring on a Tony Fernandez throwing error.  A Jeff Kent RBI single in the 8th tied it but in the bottom of the 8th, Anthony Young gave up an RBI single to Tony Gwynn.  Mets didn't score in the 9th.  Anthony Young fell to 0-3 on the year and after losing the last 14 of 1992 - it made the losing streak 17.

After Sid Fernandez allowed a 2 run HR that tied the game at 3 in the top of the 8th, Eddie Murray singled in Rodney McCrae in the bottom of the 8th for the winning run.
