From the Mets 2 Blue Jays 1 Post Game Notes - 4/6/2025

  • Mets:
    • The Mets picked up their first sweep of the season and it was their first sweep of the Blue Jays since July 15-17, 2001...The victory extended New York’s winning streak to four games, a season-high...The Mets are three games over .500 for the first time this season...They move to 3-0 at home this season...It is the first time the Mets have won their first three home games since 2015 when they won their first 10 home games of the season.
    • The Mets have a major league-leading 1.91 ERA (17 ER/80.0 IP) through the teams' first nine games...Is the fourth-best mark in franchise history through the team’s first nine games of the season behind the 1968 team (1.44), the 1971 team (1.58) and the 1985 squad (1.73).
    • Mets relievers have combined to post a 1.29 ERA (5 ER/35.0 IP) this season...They have allowed just two of 20 inherited runners to score.
    • Mets pitchers have recorded 84 strikeouts this season, the seventh-most strikeouts through the first nine games of a season in franchise history (98K in 2018, 96K in 2022, 94K in 2019, 91K in 2019 and 2021 and 85K in 2016).
  • Max Kranick:
    • Earned his first win of the season after stranding three inherited runners in the fifth inning and tossing a perfect sixth...Marked his third career win and first since September 26, 2021 at Philadelphia...This season, he has stranded all six of his inherited runners, tying teammate Reed Garrett for the most inherited runners stranded in the majors.
    • Extended his career-high scoreless inning streak to 12.0 IP (since: 5/7/22 at Cincinnati with Pittsburgh), including 7.0 innings pitched this season…Has retired 21 of 22 batters faced this season, holding his opponents to a .045 average.
  • Reed Garrett
    • Pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief and has now held his opponents scoreless in all four of his appearances this season...Dating back to August 28, 2024 he held his opponents scoreless in 15 of his last 16 appearances (15.0 IP) and has held opponents to a .176 batting average (9-51).
  • Pete Alonso
    • Hit an RBI single in the third inning to give the Mets a 1-0 lead...He now has 11 RBI in his last six games (since 3/31)...He is one of 11 players in franchise history to record at least 11 RBI through the team’s first nine games of a season and is the only player in franchise history to do so multiple times (also: 2019, ‘22).
  • Juan Soto:
    • Drew a walk in the third and extended his on-base streak to nine...Also doubled in the seventh..Is his longest on-base streak to start a season.

Brian Joura Mets360: "The Mets’ bullpen threw 4.1 IP of scoreless ball, allowing just one hit, leading the Mets to a 2-1 victory over the Blue Jays Sunday at Citi Field, completing a sweep of the three-game series. It was the fourth-straight win for the Mets, pushing their record to 6-3 on the year."

Mike Puma  NY Post: Mets’bullpen dominates again to finish off sweep of Blue Jays. “The Mets managed only 10 runs in sweeping the three games…Pete Alonso, who blasted three homers for the week, delivered an RBI single in the third that produced the game’s first run. Brandon Nimmo’s ensuing sacrifice fly gave the Mets a 2-0 lead.”

Newsday: "Max Kranick picked up his first big-league win since 2021 with 1 1⁄3 perfect innings in relief of Peterson. Kranick was followed by Reed Garrett and A.J. Minter, who each threw a scoreless frame, and Edwin Diaz, who worked around a pair of hit batsmen in the ninth by getting Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to ground into a forceout for his second save."

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: "The bullpen was taxed already after a close game Friday and an extra-inning contest Saturday night. Right-hander Ryne Stanek was unavailable after warming up three times Saturday, and so was Huascar Brazobán, who pitched 2 1/3 innings in the second game of the series to bridge the gap to closer Edwin Diaz in a tie game."

Mets’ David Peterson scare was just nausea in sign of relief. “David Peterson bent over behind the mound in Sunday’s fifth inning, giving the appearance of perhaps a back ailment. To the Mets’ relief, the left-hander merely was dealing with nausea... Peterson said he was examined by team medical personnel but didn’t have any additional symptoms.”

David Lennon Newsday: Mets have retained their winning vibefrom last season. “But these Mets, just like the post-Memorial Day marauders from last season, already have displayed the same winning knack for keeping things together. The difference this year? The vibe is immaculate from the jump, and much to the delight of owner Steve Cohen, there’s been way more fans in the building to enjoy the Mets’ 6-3 start (a light-year leap from the 0-5 kickoff at Citi Field last April).”

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Yohan Ramirez allows 5 runs in disastrous 8th inning in Mets’ loss to Reds."With a handful of relievers unavailable to pitch Saturday afternoon at Great American Ballpark, they needed Jake Diekman and Yohan Ramirez to eat some serious innings and protect a three-run lead. Diekman gave up two runs and Ramirez (0-1) was tagged for five, three of which came off the bat of Spencer Steer in a disastrous eighth inning. Steer’s go-ahead bomb helped the Cincinnati Reds overtake the Mets in a 9-6 loss in the second game of the series."

Brian Joura Mets360: "But despite [an] early 2-0 deficit, the Mets rallied back with a four-run fourth inning, with a two-run single by Omar Narvaez, followed by a two-run double by Brandon Nimmo. They added on another run in the fifth thanks to an RBI double by Taylor."

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets snag first win behind Marcus Stroman, bullpen redemption. “The ball was put in play Tuesday, Stroman’s defense responded and scoring was a challenge for the opposition...And this time the Mets bullpen protected a lead.”

Anthony DiComo Mets.com: Stro keeps ball on ground, lifts Mets to 1st W. “Since Marcus Stroman’s first full season in 2016, no qualified pitcher has produced ground balls at a higher rate.”

Tim Healey Newsday: “Pitching in a game that mattered for the first time in a year and a half, Marcus Stroman showed no signs of rust. He held the Phillies to one run and three hits in six innings. The run came on Didi Gregorius' homer in the fourth, a shot to centerfield. Stroman struck out three and walked two. Of his 18 outs, 13 came on groundballs.”

Charlie Hangley Mets360: “In top of the fourth, Dominic Smith hit the Mets first home run of the year, a bomb to the opposite field, knocking in Pete Alonso, who had walked just ahead of him. The game stood there until the seventh, when the New Yorkers busted this thing open with some help from the Phillies’ bullpen”. (Subscription required).

Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: “The Mets put up a four-run seventh inning after Vince Velasquez walked three of the first four batters he faced. That the Mets capitalized on the opportunity, and extended their one-run lead to a five-run advantage, was a positive sign after they led the league with runners left in scoring position in 2020.”

Brooklyn Trolley Blogger: N.Y. Mets Earn First Win Despite More Late Inning High-Jinx.  Bullpen already singing the Broad Street Blues. "This time Castro in the seventh yielded a run on three hits with two strikeouts.  However, Trevor May fared better in his second outing, fanning two in the eighth.  Jeurys Familia, to no one's surprise, struggled while closing out the ninth."

2015, the last year the Mets went to the World Series, started out well as the Mets scored another opening day win with Bartolo Colon beating Max Scherzer for their 35th Opening Day win in their history.  Lucas Duda goes 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Buddy Carlyle gets the only Save of his 9 year MLB career.  Jerry Blevins makes his Mets debut.

Kevin Kernan NY Post: Bartolo Colon’s Opening Day perfectly summed up by Matt Harvey. When Terry Collins announced two weeks ago baseball fossil Bartolo Colon would be the Mets’ Opening Day starter, and not Jacob deGrom or Harvey, there was no panic from the Mets. “Bartolo’s got that covered,’’ Harvey said.

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets triumph on Opening Day as Colon beats Scherzer. "Ian Desmond misplayed a pop-up in the sixth, and Lucas Duda followed with a two-run single against Max Scherzer for the Mets’ first hit of the season...Scherzer, in his Nationals debut — he signed a $210 million contract with the club in January — took a no-hitter into the sixth and finished the game with three unearned runs allowed over 7 ²/₃ innings, following two Desmond errors...At 41 years and 317 days, Colon became the oldest pitcher in franchise history to win an opener."

Kevin Kernan NY Post: ‘This is the year’: Terry Collins talks big, offers no excuses. “We have high expectations,’’ manager Terry Collins told The Post. “A lot of it is because we basically went out and got a No. 1 pitcher — Matt Harvey — even though he’s been ours, we got a No. 1 starting pitcher. They’re hard to find.’’

Year: 2014; Game #6; Sunday;  Apr 6, NYM 1  Vs. CIN 2; boxscore;  WP: Simon; LP: Niese;  Save: Parra; Time: 02:35; DAY; Attendance: 26,928; Record: 2-4; Standings: 5; Games up/behind: 2.5; L;

Jon Niese threw 5 shutout innings before running into trouble in the 6th when he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits.  That was all the Reds needed to win as the Mets managed just 4 hits - 2 by Ike Davis.

NY Post: Lifeless Mets muster 4 hits, single run in loss to Reds. A day after delivering a pinch-hit, game-ending grand slam, Ike Davis went 2-for-4 with a double. Juan Lagares’ RBI single and Eric Young Jr.’s double accounted for the Mets’ only other hits. Travis d’Arnaud’s early-season nosedive continued with an 0-for-3 that left him hitless in 15 at-bats to start the season.

NY PostDaniel Murphy went 0-for-4 to snap a 14-game hitting streak that dated to Sept. 19 of last season.

NY Post: Mets offense awakens in time. "...the Mets came back from one-run deficits twice and put together a three-run seventh inning to snap a tie and emerge with a 7-3 victory yesterday that ended their two-game skid...The Mets’ battery was exceptional, as Niese followed his Opening Day gem by surrendering two runs (one earned) in six innings and catcher John Buck tore up his former team with four RBIs. As of yesterday afternoon, Buck was pacing the NL with nine RBIs."

Mike Pelfrey gave up 7 runs in 2 innings, the Mets came back to tie it up at 7 but ended up losing.

ESPN.com: “Jose Reyes doubled and Willie Harris walked. David Wright and Carlos Beltran followed with RBI singles. After Angel Pagan singled to load the bases, Ike Davis ripped a two-run double to get the Mets within a run. Joe Blanton left after walking Brad Emaus to load the bases. Antonio Bastardo came in and struck out Josh Thole. But Daniel Murphy singled to left to tie it at 7.”

NY PostBlaine Boyer (0-1) allowed two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth, and the Mets didn’t have an answer after rebounding from a 7-0 deficit to tie the game.

Pedro Martinez (W,1-0) wasn't sharp as he was still recovering from a foot injury in Spring Training that required him to wear special shoes.  Pedro's line: 6 innings, 4 hits, 5 runs, 4 ER, 5 walks, 6 Ks, 1 HR, 3 HBPs - the most in his career and a Mets record by a Mets pitcher in a single game.  Luckily, the Mets offense bailed him out.  After Pedro Martinez and Jose Reyes had back to back RBI singles in the 4th to make it a 5-2 Mets lead, Pedro gave it right back in the 5th on a walk, HBP and a 3-run Nick Johnson homer.  Carlos Delgado homered in the bottom of the 5th to put the Mets back up 6-5 and Carlos Beltran added a 2-run homer in the 7th to make it 8-5.  Duaner Sanchez and Chad Bradford with 3-scoreless innings to keep the Mets in front.

NY Post: Same Old Mets - start 0-2 as Glavine Fails. "How ’bout those New Mets? They dropped another one last night, a 9-5 pasting by the Reds, making them 0-2 on the new season. Believe it or not, they haven’t started 0-2 since 1997...Glavine did not pitch well, surrendering five runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. Joe Randa...later put the game away in the eighth with a grand slam against Mike DeJean..."

The Kaz Matsui Era sure got off to a good start -

NY Post: Mets have Kaz to celebrate; Matsui stars in season opener. "Matsui made remarkable history in last night’s 7-2 season-opening win over the Braves, leading off by homering on the first pitch of the game, the first pitch of the season, the first pitch of his major-league career...It was part of a magical night for the Japanese rookie shortstop, who went 3-for-3 with the homer, two doubles, three RBIs and two walks. Call it perhaps the greatest debut in Mets history, and, no, there’s nothing lost in the translation there. 'It’s more than I ever imagined,' Matsui said."

NY Post: Benitez Blows it; Expos' 3 Run HR beats Mets closer.  Pitching three days in a row also has not been Benitez’ forte; the third day often is his downfall. Still, Howe had no hesitation about calling for Benitez yesterday with the Mets up 5-4 going into the ninth...boos smothered Benitez after he allowed a game-winning three-run homer to little-known Jeff Liefer.

Jeff D'Amico started for the Mets going 6 innings, 2 runs - both earned, 5 hits, 1 walk, 4 Ks;  David Weathers pitched a scoreless 8th for the win.

Roger Cedeno went 3 for 5, 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, 1 K to raise his early season average to .389; Edgardo Alfonzo 2 for 4, double, 2 RBIs, 1 run scored, 1 walk;

This Day in Baseball.com: "The Mets Score 9 runs in the 9th inning - 8 off John Smoltz [in relief] - to break a 2-2 tie and defeat the Braves, 11-2. Rey Ordonez's bases-loaded double is the big blow as the Mets have 15 at bats in the 9th.  It is the most runs they've ever scored in the frame."
