Mets 2 Marlins 0 Post Game Notes - 4/7/2025

  • Mets
    • Won their fifth straight game of the season and have won each of their first four home games...Have allowed two or fewer runs in four straight games, their longest such streak since September 15 - September 18, 2024.
    • For the sixth time in franchise history and first time in 10 seasons, the Mets have won their first four games at home (also: 1985, 1988, 2005, 2012 and 2015).
  • Kodai Senga
    • Earned his first win of the season after pitching 5.0 scoreless innings and striking out four batters...It is his fourth career game where he went at least 5.0 innings and didn’t allow a run (Last: 9/14/23 vs. Arizona).
  • Francisco Lindor
    • Singled in each of his first three at-bats, including a bunt single in the third...Has hit safely in six straight games and tallied his first multi-hit game of the season.
    • With his third hit of the night, a single to left in the fifth inning, Lindor has totaled 1,500 career hits...He is the 24th active player to reach the milestone...Is one of nine players to record 1,500+ hits since 2015.
  • Mark Vientos: Reached base three times for the first time this season after recording a career-high three walks...It is the 19th time in his career he has been on base at least three times in a game.
  • Juan Soto: Hit an RBI double in the third inning to give the Mets a 1-0 lead...He has now reached base safely in each of his first 10 games as a Met, a career-high season-opening streak...His 10-game streak is currently tied for the third longest season-opening on-base streak in the majors this season.
  • Tyrone Taylor: Singled home a run in the eighth inning to increase the Mets lead to 2-0...It was his first RBI of the season.
  • Ryne Stanek: Picked up his first career save as a Met.

NY Post: Mets continue pitching dominance in shutout win over Marlins. "The Mets lugged baseball’s best ERA into play and smothered it even further with a 2-0 shutout of the Marlins in front of 28,630 shivering fans at Citi Field on Monday for a fifth straight win. Kodai Senga, Danny Young, José Buttó and Ryne Stanek combined for a seven-hitter that made Marlins batters look overmatched — just like the Blue Jays often looked overmatched, as did the Marlins last week, as did the Astros in the season-opening series."

Brian Joura Mets360: "After throwing 32 pitches on Saturday, Butto was able to come in and throw two scoreless innings – something he probably wouldn’t be able to do last year in his first year as a reliever. After pitching back-to-back days, Edwin Diaz wasn’t available. Ryne Stanek pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his first save as a Met."

Tim Healey Newsday: Francisco Lindor reaches 1,500-hit milestone in Mets' win over Marlins. “Lindor’s latest round number offered an opportunity to wonder: Might the Hall of Fame be in his future?... How he fares in the back half — including the last seven years of his guaranteed contract with the Mets — will determine his fate.”

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Mets arms continue dominantstart to season in shutout victory over Marlins.  “Facing the Marlins for the second time in a week, the Mets (7-3) avoided facing ace Sandy Alcantara, with the 2022 Cy Young Award winner having been added to the paternity list earlier in the day. Valente Bellozo, a soft-tossing journeyman, took his place, proving tough to hit, but for different reasons than the fireballing Alcantara. His velocity topped out at just 91.7 MPH, but he induced weak contact with his four-seam fastball and cutter.”

Francisco Lindor (1-3, HR, 2 RBI, R, 2 BB): Lined a two-run homer in the eighth, his second consecutive season homering in the Mets opener.

Tylor Megill (6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 3 K): Moved to 6-0 with a 1.44 ERA (8 ER/39.0 IP) in seven career April starts...Is the only pitcher in the majors to win each of his first two starts of the season over the last two years...Joins Tom Seaver (April 5, 1983) as the only other pitcher in franchise history to throw 6.0 shutout innings and allow three hits or fewer in a home Opener (Courtesy of Elias)."

Brian Joura Mets360: "Turned out that the “always play us tough” Marlins were just what the doctor ordered for the Mets to end their slide, as they thumped their division rival, 9-3, in their home opener Friday afternoon."

Metstradamus: "Edward Cabrera...threw 85 pitches in 2 and 2/3’s innings, didn’t give up a hit but walked seven hitters. And if his final pitch, which was ball four with the bases loaded to Mark Canha was a couple of inches higher, he wouldn’t have given up any runs in three innings."

Mike Puma NY Post: "With Megill’s fastball popping and extended innings for their lineup in vogue, the Mets rolled to a 5-1 victory at Nationals Park and continued the franchise’s Opening Day dominance. The Mets improved to 40-21 all-time in openers for a .656 winning percentage that is by far MLB’s best."

Mets.com: Megill gets big K of Soto, rises to occasion. "a run of poor luck resulted in a first-and-third, one-out predicament with Soto sauntering to the plate...Megill decided to attack one of baseball’s most potent hitters. He sequenced a changeup for a strike, then another one away. A fastball fouled back, then another one inside. Finally, Megill delivered his pièce de résistance: a 98-mph fastball up in the zone, which Soto swung through for strike three."

SNY.TV: "Megill allowed just three hits while striking out six Nats without a walk. Considering that he didn’t know for sure he was going to start until Wednesday, Megill gave the Mets everything they could have hoped for from their Opening Day starter."

Metstradamus: "And before you start complaining that Megill only went five innings and 68 pitches: look, I’m not stretching anyone out too fast after a shortened spring training because club owners wanted to fight for every dollar imaginable so they could not spend it on payroll (looking squarely at you, Cincinnati). Teams have a 28 man roster. The Mets have 14 pitchers. Let ’em pitch."

NY Post: Thunder Sticks; Mets Get Offensive As Onslaught Filets Fish.  "The Mets ripped 13 more hits last night – six for extra bases – en route to the nine runs, scoring multiple runs in four different innings and having four players rap at least two hits...Carlos Delgado and Xavier Nady also had two hits apiece. Even Anderson Hernandez had his first hit of the year after an 0-for-12 start."

NY Post: Swept Mets are left seeing Red - Disturbing loss seals 0-3 start. "Three games into the season, the New Mets are still looking for their first victory...Making his first Met start, Kaz Ishii pitched respectably – he allowed only one hit over the first six innings, though the hit was Wily Mo Pena’s solo homer to left-center – but he allowed three more runs in the seventh, making his final line unimpressive. Overall, Ishii went 6.2 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) while walking four and fanning seven...The Mets, meanwhile, finished with only four hits and one run, going 2-for-11 with men on base. The Reds had only three hits, but they were Pena’s homer, D’Angelo Jimenez’s two-run double and Ryan Freel’s RBI single. That’s pretty efficient and a main reason why the Mets lost their third straight."
