Mike Puma NY Post: Francisco Lindor homers twice as Mets survive late rally to beat Phillies for fifth straight win. "The Mets shortstop, struggling on the road, has been Superman at Citi Field...Lindor’s three-run blast in the seventh gave the Mets their final runs. He also homered leading off for a second straight day. All five of Lindor’s homers this season have been hit at home."

Brian Joura Mets360: "Tylor Megill started for the Mets and pitched really well, with his only flaw being four walks. Yet he allowed just one hit in 5.1 IP and earned his third win of the season. Megill tied his career high with 10 strikeouts. Jesse Winker homered to give the Mets a 2-0 lead. And Juan Soto hit a ball that was ruled a homer but overturned, correctly, on replay."

On the day he is presented with his Cy Young Award, Mets' fireballer Tom Seaver ties a major league record by whiffing 19 Padres, including the last ten he faces, to gain a 2-1 win at Shea Stadium. Batterymate Jerry Grote sets the major league mark with ten consecutive putouts in a game for a catcher.

2008

In a scheduling oddity, both New York big league teams play in Chicago, with the Mets playing the Cubs in a matinee, and the Yankees taking on the White Sox in an evening tilt. This unusual occurrence marks the first time in 11+ years that two teams from one city have both played as the visitors in the same city on the same date, a quirk likely necessitated due to the Pope's weekend visit to the Bronx, whose appearance included a mass at Yankee Stadium two days ago.

Baseball Reference:

1962 - The Pittsburgh Pirates win their 10th straight game, edging the New York Mets, 4 - 3, and matching the major-league record to start a season, while the Mets tie a National League record by opening 0-9.

1966 - The Braves win their first game in Atlanta by beating the Mets, 8 - 4.
