Brian Joura Mets360: "Six Mets pitchers combined on a 7-hit shutout to lead the Mets to a 2-0 victory over the Nationals in a weather-delayed game Saturday afternoon in D.C. It was the fifth shutout of the season for the Mets. Last year when they won 89 games, the Mets had just nine shutouts."
Anthony Rieber Newsday: "Carlos Mendoza picked the perfect game for Jeff McNeil to make his first start of the season in centerfield: One in which ground-ball machine Clay Holmes is pitching. McNeil did not get a sniff of a chance in Holmes’ five innings in the Mets’ 2-0 victory over the Nationals on Saturday before 33,867 — including a sizable and vocal contingent of The 7 Line Army — at Nationals Park. The game was delayed by rain for 25 minutes before the first pitch and for 46 minutes during Nathaniel Lowe’s at-bat in the bottom of the first. If not for that delay, Holmes might have gone longer, as he was taken out after only 70 pitches."
Mike Puma NY Post: Francisco Alvarez homer powers Mets over Nationals in rebound win. "Alvarez’s two-run homer served as the Mets offense in a 2-0 victory over the Nationals. The Mets won for the eighth time in nine games, rebounding after their seven-game winning streak was snapped a night earlier. Luis Torrens nicely filled the void at catcher as Alvarez rehabbed from surgery in spring training to remove a broken hamate bone from his left hand. But as much skill as Torrens brings to the position defensively, it’s the 23-year-old Alvarez’s potential offensively that sets him apart from most catchers."
The Athletic: Mets reliever A.J. Minter leaves game, likelyheaded to injured list. “Minter walked off the mound in the middle of an at-bat
during the eighth inning because he felt his triceps tighten. He is expected to
get an MRI on Sunday. Echoing Mendoza, Minter said he anticipated going on the
injured list.”

Good point by Zeile on post-game re Alvarez. Just as significant as his HR was the way he took charge when Diaz showed signs of struggling with control. Went to the mound, seemed to get Diaz to re-set, get his mechanics in sync, throw strikes, finish off the save.

Devenski an interesting candidate. A lot of injuries, ineffectiveness since he was an All-Star with lights-out change-up several years ago. But has pitched well in Syracuse so far. Nunez, a revelation last year before injury, has struggled with command at AAA. https://t.co/kVQsvx1VJ1

Bill Madden NY Daily News: Credit David Stearns for early success of Mets starting rotation. "Consider this a mea culpa to David Stearns. I admit I was highly critical of the Mets’ head of baseball operations for what I perceived as a short-sightedness when it came to reconstructing the Mets starting rotation on the cheap over the winter… his belief in Holmes as a starter and Canning as a worthwhile low cost, back-of-the-rotation investment are paying off in the hands of pitching coach Jeremy Hefner and his assistant Desi Druschel. Nobody is getting more bang for their starting pitching buck so far this season than the Mets.”

1973 | Braves hurler Pat Dobson three-hits the Mets and beats Tom Seaver, who also gives up only three hits, 2-0. The Atlanta Fulton County Stadium contest takes one-hour and 37 minutes to complete, making it the quickest game ever played in Mets history. |
2004 | At Dodger Stadium, Mike Piazza ties Carlton Fisk for the most career homers by a catcher as he hits Hideo Nomo's sixth-inning pitch into the stands for his 351st round-tripper as a backstop. The homer, which was his 362nd overall, moves the Mets' star past Yankees' Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio on the all-time list. |
2010 | David Wright, with an RBI single to right field off Ramon Troncoso in the fifth inning of New York's 10-5 victory over L.A. at Citi Field, becomes the eighth and quickest player to accumulate 1,000 hits in a Mets uniform. The 27 year-old third baseman, who surpasses Mike Piazza's mark of 935 games to reach the milestone, accomplishes the feat in his 868th career contest with the club. |
2010 | The suddenly streaking Mets win their sixth consecutive game with a doubleheader sweep of the Dodgers, 4-0 and 10-5. The victories mark the first time since August 28, 1971 that the club has taken both ends of a twin bill from L.A. |
2012 | Mets left fielder Scott Hairston became the tenth player in franchise history to hit for the cycle with his sixth inning double, plating Rueben Tejada and David Wright. The outfielder's four hits, which drive in four runs, aren't enough when Colorado routs New York, scoring 11 times in the fifth, in the Coors Field's contest, 18-9. |
2010: The Mets sweep the Dodgers in a doubleheader, 4 - 0 and 10 - 5, to extend their winning streak to 6 games and to record their 8th win in their last 9 games. Jason Bay hits his first home run as a Met in support of Johan Santana's pitching in the opener, while David Wright drives in four runs in the nitecap.
2012 The Rockies reverse a 6 - 2 deficit with an 11-run 5th-inning outburst against the Mets, then pull out with an 18 - 9 win at Coors Field. Eric Young starts the ball rolling by beating P Chris Schwinden's throw on a comebacker to the mound; 3 walks, 7 hits, 4 errors and a hit batsman later, the Rockies are cruising to an easy win; Carlos Gonzalez drives in 5 runs during the frame, then Ramon Hernandez adds a grand slam in the 7th. For the Mets, Scott Hairston hits for the cycle in a losing cause, while the two teams combine for 36 hits in the slugfest.
