Mets 4 Pirates 3 Post Game Notes - 5/12/2025

Mets

  • The Mets defeated Pittsburgh, 4-3, in the first game of their three-game set...It was their fourth walk-off victory of the season...Move to 22-1 in games when leading after the seventh inning.

Pete Alonso

  • Hit a go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning to put the Mets up 3-2...Hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to give the Mets a 4-3 win...It was his eighth career walk-off RBI, which ties him with Kevin McReynolds for the third-most walk-off plate appearances in franchise history...He trails only Wilmer Flores (10) and David Wright (9)...He has recorded 146 go-ahead RBI in his career, passing Howard Johnson (144) for the sixth-most in franchise history...He now has 36 RBI on the season which is the most in the NL...His 36 RBI through the team’s first 42 games of a season are tied with himself (2022), Robin Ventura (1999), Bernard Gilkey (1996) and Dave Kingman (1976) for the second-most in franchise history (most: Dave Kingman’s 37 RBI in 1982).

David Peterson

  • Did not record a decision despite allowing two earned runs over 6.0+ innings...He threw at least 100 pitches in back-to-back outings for the fifth time in his career and for the first time since 6/17 and 6/24/24...Has allowed three earned runs or less in each of his eight starts this season and in each of his last nine starts dating back to September 29, 2024 (second-longest such streak of his career)...Since the beginning of last season, the Mets are 21-8 in games he has pitched.

Juan Soto

  • Drew a walk in the first inning and hit a single in the ninth...Marked his 800th career walk, becoming the youngest player in Major League history to reach the mark.

Francisco Lindor

  • Hit two singles and scored the winning run off Pete Alonso’s sac fly...In 20 home games this season, has posted a .407/.444/.741 (33-81) with 20 runs, three doubles, eight home runs, 15 RBI, seven walks, two stolen bases and three sacrifice flies...His 33 hits through a player’s first 20 home games of a season are the most in franchise history.

NY Post: The Mets scored twice in the seventh and survived a scare in the ninth before winning 4-3 on Pete Alonso’s walk-off sacrifice fly against David Bednar.

NY Post: Mets’ Brandon Nimmo robs another homer in latest defensive gem: ‘Insane catch’. "Pete Alonso’s mind kept repeating, “Don’t be a homer.” But from his spot in left field, as Joey Bart’s fly ball sailed toward left field to lead off the eighth inning, Brandon Nimmo thought he had a chance...When he leapt and came down with Bart’s ball, Nimmo helped keep the Mets lead at the time intact and prevented the ninth inning — when two infield errors allowed the tying run to score — from becoming even more disastrous in their 4-3 walk-off win Tuesday against the Pirates at Citi Field."

Brian Joura Mets360: "Pittsburgh did ultimately tie the game in the top of the ninth, and the Mets were objectively lucky to have not given up more than just that one run. Lindor bobbled a tailor-made double play, after Huascar Brazoban gave up a lead off single. Acuña later misplayed a ground ball at third base, leaving everyone safe. Lindor limited the damage, orchestrating a clutch double play to end the inning."

From the Mets 4 Braves 3 Post Game Notes - 5/12/2024

Mets:
  • Earned their fourth walk-off win of the season, tied with Baltimore for the most in the majors...Was their first walk-off win against Atlanta since September 29, 2019.
  • Are 33-32 all-time on Mother's Day.
  • Are 10-7 at home after dropping their first five home games to start the season.
Brandon Nimmo:
  • Launched a walk-off two-run homer in the ninth, the second walk-off homer of his career...Had a walk-off three-run homer on July 11, 2018 vs. Philadelphia...Was his fourth career walk-off RBI (Last: 6/14/23 vs. Yankees, Double)...Was the first walk-off homer by a Mets left-handed batter since Dominic Smith's walk-off three-run homer vs. Atlanta on September 29, 2019.
Pete Alonso:
  • Put the Mets on the board with an RBI single in the third...Laced a game-tying RBI double in the sixth...Has 142 career multi-RBI games, tied with Howard Johnson for the fourth-most such games in Mets history...Has 520 career RBI, one shy of tying Cleon Jones and José Reyes for eighth in franchise history.
Reed Garrett:
  • Has 35 strikeouts, the most among major league relievers...His six games with three or more strikeouts are the second-most by a relief pitcher in the majors this season, trailing only Oakland's Mason Miller (seven).

Brian Joura Mets360: "Brandon Nimmo didn’t start the game but he sure did finish it. Nimmo cracked a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, sending the Mets to a 4-3 win over the Braves Sunday night. The walk-off win, the Mets’ fourth of the season, salvaged the final game of the series."

NY Post: Brandon Nimmo’s walk-off home run lifts Mets to badly needed win over Braves. "...Nimmo felt good as he took swings in the batting cage to test the ribs before the game and summoned Mendoza to watch him. The team’s trainer, Joe Golia, also watched along with hitting coaches Eric Chavez and Jeremy Barnes. At that point Mendoza was already committed to his lineup for the night, but told Nimmo to be ready for the later innings."

NY Post: Jeff McNeil’s ninth-inning bunt paves way for Mets’ heroics: ‘In my back pocket’. "McNeil entered the at-bat without a hit — and knowing he hadn’t had much success in his career against Atlanta’s A.J. Minter...McNeil changed his approach and bunted the next pitch past Minter, on the right side of the mound.  Second baseman Ozzie Albies had no chance on the play and the Mets suddenly found themselves set up to at least have a chance to tie the game."

NY Post: Matt Harvey’s return was as bad as you can imagine for Mets. "Aside from a fifth inning Friday night in which he somehow retired the side in order, Harvey (L,2-3) was a mess at Miller Park, either walking batters or leaving pitches over the plate for easy crushing...Harvey’s struggles buried the Mets in a 7-4 loss to the Brewers...For Harvey, it marked a third straight start in which he allowed at least five earned runs and failed to complete six innings,..Neil Walker’s second hit of the night, an RBI single in the sixth, had tied it 2-2 against Matt Garza. The rally started with Asdrubal Cabrera’s two-out double and continued with a walk to Jay Bruce...Walker, who had hit a solo homer in the fourth inning, then delivered to tie the game before Bruce was picked off second by catcher Jett Bandy to end the inning."

NY Post: Mets’ Noah Syndergaard gets no run support, loses MLB debut. "Syndergaard was solid into the sixth inning before allowing three runs, on a night the Mets lost their second straight, 6-1 to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The Mets’ top pitching prospect threw 103 pitches over 5 ¹/₃ innings in which he surrendered three earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts and four walks."

ESPN.com: Arrieta, Bryant lead Cubs past Mets 6-1. "Arrieta pitched eight sparkling innings, Bryant homered for the second straight day and the Chicago Cubs spoiled Syndergaard's anticipated debut with a 6-1 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night. Arrieta (4-3) had a season-high 10 strikeouts and allowed one run and three hits. The right-hander had dropped each of his last two starts...Showing off his electric fastball and sharp curve, Syndergaard had moments where he looked ready to join Matt Harvey on top of a fearsome rotation for New York. But the 6-foot-6 right-hander faded in the sixth and was charged with three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings."

"[David] Wright singled home a run in the first inning, hit his fourth homer in the third, singled and scored in the sixth, and added an RBI single in the ninth. Baseball Reference: The Nationals continue to surprise, beating the Mets, 6 - 4, at Citi Field, thanks to Roger Bernadina's first two homers this year. The second is a two-run shot off closer Francisco Rodriguez in the 9th inning and comes moments after Bernadina makes a diving game-saving catch to rob Jeff Francoeur with the bases loaded. Nats starter Craig Stammen contributes the other 3 RBI but does not figure in the decision; instead, reliever Tyler Clippard picks up his major-league leading 7th win, followed by Matt Capps's 14th save, which is also a major league high so far this season.

NY Daily News: After Mets’ loss, Nelson Figueroa calls Nationals ‘bunch of softball girls’. "Incensed at the chants emanating from the Washington dugout during the Mets’ 10-4 loss Monday night at Shea, Figueroa ripped the Nationals afterward...Figueroa (L,2-3) didn’t help his cause. He loaded the bases in the third by plunking Ryan Zimmerman, then forced in a run by walking Nick Johnson as the Nats tied the score at 2...An inning later, after the Mets retook the lead on an RBI single by Damion Easley, Figueroa committed a costly throwing error...Figueroa’s throw went well wide of catcher Brian Schneider as Washington again tied the score, this time at 3...Figueroa allowed Washington (16-23) to take the lead in the fifth. Former Met farmhand Jesus Flores...delivered a two-out, two-run double. With Figueroa’s outing disintegrating, he then allowed an RBI single to opposing pitcher Odalis Perez as Jorge Sosa scurried to warm up in the bullpen...Lastings Milledge greeted [Sosa] with a two-run double."

NY Post: NO WAY, JOSE – LIMA’S LATEST NOT ANY BETTER. "After Lima left, the next three relievers who came in all gave up runs – Chad Bradford, Darren Oliver and Heath Bell. And the Mets were pitiful with men on base, going 3-for-18 until the ninth inning...The Mets were down 9-4 in the ninth with two outs and a runner on first. But Carlos Delgado, David Wright and Cliff Floyd all singled, and reliever Dan Kolb made an error. " The loss wasted a terrific pitching performance by starter Steve Trachsel (7 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs) and a highlight-film defensive play by Roberto Alomar...The climactic blow was a game-winning two-run home run by Colorado’s Larry Walker in the top of the 13th off erratic Mets’ reliever Kane Davis, who couldn’t find the plate at first, and when he finally did, served up the meatball to Walker."
