Mets 6 Cubs 2 Post Game Notes - 5/11/2025

MetsThe Mets defeated Chicago-NL, 6-2, in the rubber game of their three-game set...Luis Torrens tripled in the second inning, bringing the Mets total triple count on the year to 11...It is a Major League best...The Mets collected just 15 triples on the season in 2024…Are 33-32 all-time on Mother's Day.

Griffin CanningGave up one run over 6.0 innings while giving up two hits, walking one and striking out five...Allowed a season-low of two hits and it was just the fourth time in his career that he has allowed two or less hits in a start (last: 5/23/23 at Boston)...After walking Justin Turner in the second inning he retired the next 10 batters before allowing a solo home run to Pete Crow-Armstrong in the sixth inning…In five career starts at Citi Field he has a 2-0 record and a 1.61 ERA (5 ER/28.0 IP)...He has allowed just one earned run in all five of his starts in Queens...Has allowed no more than one run in each of his four home starts this season, becoming the seventh Mets starter to accomplish the feat, joining Jacob deGrom (8 GS), David Cone (5 GS), Jason Vargas, Jae Weong Seo, Al Leiter and Craig Swan.

Francisco Lindor: Hit a solo home to right field in the eighth inning to put the Mets in front 3-2...His nine home run is the most among shortstops this season...Marked his 119th home run, passing Ed Kranepool for the 13th-most in franchise history.

Brandon Nimmo: Hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to extend the Mets lead to 6-2...Was his 118th home run, which ties him with Ed Kranepool for the 14th-most by a Met...Tallied his 395th and 396th RBI, tying Michael Conforto for the 16th-most RBI in franchise history.

Pete Alonso: Tallied his 25th extra-base hit of the season with a double in the eighth inning...Through 41 games of a season, his 25 extra-base hits are the most in franchise history...He also joins John Stearns (17), John Olerud (16) and Dom Smith (15) as the only Mets to record as many doubles through the team’s first 41 games.

Mark Vientos: Blasted a solo home run to left field in the sixth inning to put the Mets back in front 2-1...Singled home a run in the eighth inning to increase the Mets lead to 4-2...Marked his third go-ahead home run this season (also: 4/17 vs. STL and 4/30 vs. Arizona)...Over his last 24 games he has a .300/.347/.522 slash line (27-90) with five home runs, three doubles, a triple, and 16 RBI...Has hit safely in 20 of those games.

Mets.com: “It was Mother’s Day on Sunday, all right, but it was also Griffin Canning's 29th birthday – and he was living large at Citi Field. The Mets right-hander pitched one of his best games of the season, and though he was left with a no-decision, he’ll be the first to say that’s all right, because the Mets wound up defeating the Cubs, 6-2.”

Newsday: Francisco Lindor's tiebreaking homer in eighth lifts Mets. “My Girl” by The Temptations has been Lindor’s walk-up song of choice since last May, and Citi Field fans have enjoyed singing along to the iconic tune during his at-bats. But Lindor on Friday started alternating the song with “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. So when he came up in the eighth inning of a 2-2 game for his fourth at-bat, it was that song that accompanied Lindor to the plate. The noise in the ballpark reached peak volume when Lindor turned on a 3-and-1 sweeper from righthander Porter Hodge and sent it 391 feet into the Mets’ bullpen.

Mike Puma NY Post: “Vientos homered to put the Mets ahead in the sixth inning, and then in the eighth, after Francisco Lindor’s blast had provided another lead, Vientos delivered an RBI single as part of a 6-2 victory over the Cubs at Citi Field in the series rubber game. Baty, who had homered three times over the previous two games — including twice on Saturday — was on the bench against lefty Matthew Boyd. But Vientos, with Starling Marte in the DH spot, helped power the Mets to a third victory in four games.”

1962

Craig Anderson, who will not win another major league game, dropping his next 19 decisions that include 16 this season, gets the victory in both ends of a twin bill when the 5-17 Mets, beat the Braves at the Polo Grounds, 3-2 and 8-7. The victories account for the first doubleheader sweep in franchise history, and mark the first time a major league team has accomplished the feat with two walk-off homers, thanks to the ninth-inning heroics of Hobie Landrith and Gil Hodges.

1968

The Mets play their 1000th game in franchise history, losing to Chicago at Wrigley Field in the first game of a doubleheader, 4-3. The Amazins have compiled a 332-664 record along with four games that ended in a tie during the span, but start their next 1000 games of matchups with a resounding 10-0 rout of the Cubs in the nightcap.

1974

In a 4-3 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field, Bronx native Ed Kranepool collects his 1000th major league hit. The James Monroe High School graduate will play his entire 18-year career with the Mets, retiring as the all-time franchise leader with 1,418 hits.

1979

Bill Murray, anchorman on Saturday Night Live Weekend Update reports 42 year-old Chico Escuela (a fictional baseball player portrayed by Garrett Morris) has informed the Mets that he is quitting baseball. Although baseball has been "berra berra good..." to him, a crushing blow off the bat of Dodger first baseman Steve Garvey into the Dominican's infielder's crotch ends an inspiring comeback.

1990

Blanking the Dodgers at Shea Stadium, 7-0, Frank Viola gets his seventh consecutive win from the start of the season. The Mets southpaw sets a franchise record of nine straight victories, dating back to his past two decisions last season.

1998

The Padres' home game streak, which started in April of 1983 without a rainout, ends in a scheduled contest against the team, the Mets, that is leading the major leagues with eight washouts already this season. A game in San Diego hadn't been rained out in the previous 15 years, covering a total of 1,184 games.

2014

Yankee right fielder Alfonso Soriano becomes only the seventh player to collect a thousand hits in both leagues when he singles off Mets starter Bartolo Colon in the bottom of the second inning of the team's 9-7 loss at the Bronx ballpark. The 38 year-old Dominican outfielder, who is also the first major leaguer to record 100 HRs, 500 RBIs, 500 runs, and 100 RBIs in each circuit, joins Frank Robinson, Dave Winfield, Vladimir Guerrero, Fred McGriff, Orlando Cabrera, and Carlos Lee in reaching the milestone.

Baseball Reference:

2010: The Nationals continue to surprise, beating the Mets, 6 - 4, at Citi Field, thanks to Roger Bernadina's first two homers this year. The second is a two-run shot off closer Francisco Rodriguez in the 9th inning and comes moments after Bernadina makes a diving game-saving catch to rob Jeff Francoeur with the bases loaded. Nats starter Craig Stammen contributes the other 3 RBI but does not figure in the decision; instead, reliever Tyler Clippard picks up his major-league leading 7th win, followed by Matt Capps's 14th save, which is also a major league high so far this season.

2011 - Carlos Beltran belts 3 homers and drives in 6 runs as the Mets beat the Rockies, 9 - 5, after a two-hour rain delay. Beltran homers from both sides of the plate and to all three fields in his power display. Ubaldo Jimenez, who set a Rockies season-record for wins in 2010, falls to 0-3.
