Mets fall to 2nd place after another listless offensive performance.  Kodai Senga allowed a leadoff double to Jarren Duran in the 1st, followed by a walk and a wild pitch both to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs.  Both later scored on a groundout and a Trevor Story RBI single.  A walk and a Jarren Duran triple led to a 3rd Red Sox run.

Laura Albanese Newsday: Mets continue to struggle with runners in scoring position, fall to Red Sox in series opener. "The Mets rolled into wind-swept Fenway Park Monday night, and rolled out of it with more than just a 3-1 loss to the Red Sox. They were subject to a number of non-competitive at-bats with runners in scoring position, going 1-for-8 in those instances and leaving six on base."

Brian Joura Mets360: "The top of the order is hurting the Mets. And to make matters worse, both Pete Alonso and Juan Soto clubbed balls high off the wall in left field and then didn’t run out of the box. Alonso was thrown out trying to make it belatedly to second base. Soto didn’t even try for more than a single."

NY Post: "Tyrone Taylor’s RBI single in the third pulled the Mets within 3-1. Francisco Alvarez doubled leading off the inning. Francisco Lindor walked following Taylor’s single, but Soto killed the inning by hitting into a double play."

NY Post: Juan Soto is ‘very, very glum’ inside Mets’ clubhouse: Michael Kay. "Kay claimed that Soto wanted to remain a Yankee and that it had been his family that pushed him to sign with the Mets because they 'felt very comfortable around Alex and Steve Cohen.'”

NY Post: No, Juan Soto doesn’t fly on private jet to Mets games — wild rumor squashed. “'To clear up what others have asserted: Juan Soto does not fly separately from his New York Mets teammates on a private jet. He flies on the team plane. There is no private-jet provision in his contract for him or his family,' ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported on Monday afternoon. "

1999

In a twin bill sweep of Milwaukee, Mets' third baseman Robin Ventura becomes the first major league player to hit a grand slam in both ends of a doubleheader. The infielder also hit a pair of 'grand salamis' in a game against Texas while playing for the 1995 White Sox.

2000

After being released earlier in the month by the Mets for not hustling, Rickey Henderson, in his first at-bat for the Mariners, hits his record 76th career leadoff home run, a shot off Esteban Yan in the team's 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay at Safeco Field. With the round-tripper, the future Hall of Fame outfielder joins Ted Williams and Willie McCovey as the third major leaguer to have homered in four different decades.

2017

Terry Collins, a 67 year-old baseball lifer, passes Davey Johnson (1984-1990) to become the longest-tenured manager in Mets history, reaching 1,013 games with the team. The oldest skipper in the majors, sees his charges hang on to a 7-5 victory when Addison Reed strikes out Angel pinch-hitter Danny Espinosa on a 3-2 count with the bases loaded after three runs have scored in the top of the ninth inning at Citi Field.
