Syracuse, NY – Behind a fantastic Major League rehab outing by starting pitcher Paul Blackburn, the Syracuse Mets beat the Rochester Red Wings, 5-2, in front of a raucous Wednesday afternoon crowd at NBT Bank Stadium for Education Day. Blackburn tossed seven shutout innings and only allowed one hit with six strikeouts in his fifth MLB rehab outing.

After a scoreless first, the Syracuse (21-26) offense kicked into gear in the bottom of the second inning. Luis De Los Santos singled, Luke Ritter singled, and Jackson Reetz brought De Los Santos home with an RBI knock to put the Mets in front, 1-0.

The next run for the Mets was a loud one off the bat of Donovan Walton. To lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, Walton crushed a solo homer to right field and gave Syracuse a 2-0 lead.

In the seventh, the lineup kept on rolling. With one out, Drew Gilbert walked. Ronny Mauricio then hit a two-run home run to extend the Mets lead to 4-0. Soon after, Gilberto Celestino singled, Jon Singleton walked, and De Los Santos drove in Celestino with an RBI single to make it 5-0.

Rochester (13-32) scored two runs in the ninth but not enough to mount a comeback.

In three games with Syracuse, Mauricio is 7-for-11 with two home runs, a double, and four RBIS. The Mets had three batters with multiple hits: Mauricio, Celestino, and De Los Santos.

Syracuse continues its six-game series with Rochester on Thursday with game three. Right-hander Nolan McLean is scheduled to pitch for the Mets opposite right-hander Cade Cavalli for the Red Wings. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
