Des Moines, IA - The Syracuse Mets' three-game winning streak ended Friday night in an 8-5 loss to the Iowa Cubs at Principal Park. Despite the loss, Drew Gilbert went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two doubles for Syracuse.

Iowa (28-24) struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Jonathan Long singled, and Carlos Perez followed with a double to put two runners on base with no outs. After Kevin Alcantara lined out, Ben Cowles was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chase Strumpf worked a bases-loaded walk for a 1-0 Cubs lead, and Dixon Machado brought home a second run with a sacrifice fly out to center field as Iowa took a 2-0 advantage.

Syracuse (25-30) stormed back in the top of the third to take the lead. With one out, Yonny Hernandez singled, and Gilberto Celestino walked to put runners at first and second base. Gilbert followed with a double off the wall in left-center field, scoring Hernandez to trim the deficit to one, 2-1. Jon Singleton followed with a go-ahead, two-run single to right field that scored Celestino and Gilbert to put Syracuse in front, 3-2.

The Cubs tied the game back up in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Jonathan Long launched a home run over the left-field wall, knotting the game up, 3-3.

Iowa then regained the lead in the fourth. Alcantara led off the frame with a no-doubt home run that game the Cubs a 4-3 edge. Cowles and Strumpf then both singled and moved to second and third on a Machado sacrifice bunt. After Greg Allen walked, the bases were loaded. Owen Caissie struck out, but Moises Ballesteros singled off the wall in right-center field, scoring Cowles and Strumpf to give Iowa a 6-3 lead.

The Mets responded again in the fifth. With one out, Singleton walked. Ritter followed with a double high off the 20-foot-high wall in left field, nearly homering, but giving Syracuse runners at second and third. Donovan Walton hit a sacrifice fly out to center field, bringing home Singleton to make it a 6-4 ballgame.

The Cubs took their largest lead of the game in the seventh with two powerful swings of the bat. With two outs, Long and Perez hit back-to-back solo homers to push Iowa's advantage to four, 8-4.

Syracuse did make things interesting in the ninth. Hernandez led off the inning with a groundball to third base that prompted a high throw for an error that allowed Hernandez to reach base safely. After Celestino struck out, Gilbert was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Singleton followed with a single to center field that scored Hernandez to trim the deficit to three, 8-5. Unfortunately, Ritter grounded into a game-ending double play as Iowa won, 8-5.

The Mets and Cubs continue their six-game series on Saturday with the fifth game of the series. Right-hander Brandon Sproat is scheduled to start on the mound for Syracuse opposite Iowa right-hander Frankie Scalzo Jr. First pitch is slated for 7:08 p.m. ET.
