Mets hold on after rally to beat Phillies in London with wild game-ending double play “Nick Castellanos’ broken-bat squib with the bases loaded was grabbed barehanded by catcher Luis Torrens, who stepped on the plate, spun and fired off-balance to first, recording the final outs.”

Brian Joura Mets360: “Jose Quintana started for the Mets and failed to get out of the fourth inning. He now has a 5.29 ERA for the season. In games played outside of Citi Field, Quintana has allowed 25 ER in 33.2 IP for a 6.68 ERA.”

Box Score: Pirates 14 Mets 7 Brandon Nimmo CF 1 for 4, 2 Ks; Brett Baty 3B 0 for 1, 1 run scored; Francisco Alvarez C 1 for 5, 1 run scored, 1 RBI, 1 K; Tommy Pham; LF-CF 1 for 5, double, 2 RBIs, 1 run scored, 2 Ks; Francisco Lindor; SS 1 for 3, HR (12th), 1 run scored, 1 RBI;  Jeff McNeil; 2B-LF 1 for 4, double, 1 run scored;  Mark Vientos DH-1B 1 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 walk; Tylor Megill; (L,5-4) 3.2 innings, 9 runs - 7 earned, 8 hits, 3 walks, 1 K; Zach Muckenhirn 2.1 innings, 3 runs - all earned, 6 hits, 1 walk, 1 K; Tommy Hunter; 2 innings, 2 runs - both earned, 3 hits, 2 HRs, 2 Ks;

NY Post: Mets crushed by Pirates as embarrassing losing skid hits 7 games. "Sloppy on defense, with awful pitching for a second straight night, the Mets lost, 14-7, to the Pirates at PNC Park. The loss was the Mets’ seventh straight and pushed them four games below .500...Tylor Megill got hurt by his defense — the Mets were charged for two errors — but also had a rough night on the mound. The right-hander was knocked out after 3 ²/₃ innings during which he allowed eight runs — six earned — on eight hits and three walks, raising his ERA to 5.00.

SNY.TV: Mets takeaways from Friday's 14-7 loss to Pirates"The wheels completely fell off in the third inning, though. After Andrew McCutchen hit an infield single with one out, Megill looked like he would be able to get out of further trouble by getting Carlos Santana to ground one toward second base where Francisco Lindor was positioned perfectly for the easy 6-3 double play. However, Lindor booted the ball and everybody was safe...- Offensively, Mark Vientos gave New York a brief 1-0 lead with a single in the second inning and Lindor tied it at 2 with a solo shot in the third before his fielding error led to five runs...The Mets had a five-run inning of their own in the ninth, but it was too little, too late as they dropped their seventh straight game in a laugher."

Metstradamus: “The Mets broke out the long ball in bunches at Oriole Park tonight while Taijuan Walker gave up one run in seven innings as the Mets defeated the Orioles 14-1. I mean, that’s a really simple way of describing a ballgame, which is great because I don’t think the Mets have had many ballgames where you can say that things were low stress and normal.”

NY Post: Mets pummel Matt Harvey in laugher over Orioles. “The Mets hammered their one-time ace for seven earned runs over three innings…and saw his ERA jump to 7.41. Over his last six appearances, beginning with that outing at Citi Field on May 12 (in which he also allowed seven earned runs), he has pitched to a 14.19 ERA after a solid start to the season.”

National Pastime.comIn front of a dwindling crowd, made up of mostly remaining Giants fans, Chris Heston, making his 13th career start, strikes out the side in the ninth inning to finish the season's first no-hitter, a 5-0 Giants' victory over the Mets at Citi Field. The 27 year-old rookie right-hander's no-no, the 17th in franchise history, marks the fourth straight season the feat has been accomplished by a San Francisco hurler, with Matt Cain (2012) and Tim Lincecum (2013 and 2014) throwing complete games without yielding a hit during the past three years.

NY Post: Anemic Mets no-hit by Giants rookie Chris Heston. “The first 10 Mets went down in order before Heston hit Ruben Tejada and Lucas Duda back-to-back in the fourth inning with one out. But Cuddyer rapped into a third-second-first double play to snuff the threat….The only other base runner was Anthony Recker, who was hit leading off the bottom of the ninth…after hitting Recker, Heston struck out pinch-hitter Danny Muno and Granderson looking. Ditto Ruben Tejada to finish his 110-pitch gem…The Mets, who remained a half-game up on the Nationals (6-1 losers to the Yankees) in the NL East race, really had nothing resembling a threat all game — only two balls reached the outfield.”

NY POST: BELL GETS RUNG – RELIEVER FAILS AS METS FALL IN 11. "Heath Bell (L,0-3) allowed hits to the first three hitters and four of the first five Astros he faced. Morgan Ensberg had the first big blow, a ground-rule RBI double to left that made it 4-3. One out later, Adam Everett’s two-run single to right made it 6-3 and ended Bell’s night and the Mets’ hopes with it...The final tally was only the culmination of some late-inning back-and-forths. Carrying a 2-1 lead into the seventh, the Mets watched as the Astros scored two runs to take the lead. Then the Mets came back with the tying run in the eighth, thanks to Mike Cameron’s RBI infield single."

NY Post: Mets fall back to .500.  Sloppy play prevents sweep. "The little things added up in a five-run fourth for the Indians, when the Mets made no errors and didn’t give up an extra-base hit. Three singles and three walks put the Indians ahead 6-0, and that was enough to prevent a Mets sweep...The Mets (31-31) lost for the sixth time in eight games and returned to .500...Trailing 6-2 in the seventh, the Mets committed two costly errors and were originally charged with another when Mo Vaughn froze on a grounder, refusing to throw to second or first. Vaughn’s deer in the headlights look summed up the first baseman’s miserable day and the Mets’ game. Maybe it summed up this entire mediocre season."

NY Post: Piazza, Amazin's again turn Rocket into dud: Mike's Slam, Bell's 5 RBI's trigger rout at Stradium. "'Slider, down and moving away,' was the way Clemens described Piazza’s grand slam in the third that got the Mets moving quickly toward a 12-2 drubbing of the Yankees in Game 1 of the Subway Series...RBI singles by Derek Bell and Todd Zeile in the fourth and fifth, respectively, hiked the lead to 6-2 after five. Edgardo Alfonzo’s three-run homer in the sixth upped the bulge to 9-2 and ended Clemens’ night. And as the Rocket left the mound he was smothered with boos."

The Bobby Valentine disguise game was actually a tremendous come from behind and walk-off win for the Mets.  Down 3-0 in the 9th, the Mets tie it up on a Robin Ventura 2-run single and a Brian McRae RBI double.  A Rey Ordonez single in the 14th scores Luis Lopez for the Walk-Off Win.

National Pastime.comAfter being ejected in the 12th inning by plate umpire Randy Marsh for arguing a catcher's interference call, Bobby Valentine returns to the dugout with a fake mustache and glasses. Baseball Reference: After the old timer's game at Shea Stadium‚ Willie Mays puts on his own show with a homer and circus catch and the Mets top the Dodgers‚ 4 - 2. Willie‚ older than a half dozen of the old Mets‚ hits homer #655 of his career. Rusty Staub drives in two runs to back Jon Matlack. In the old timers game‚ the Brooklyn Dodgers/Yankees lose to the Mets‚ 1 - 0‚ in two innings.

National Pastime.com: Right fielder Rusty Staub becomes the pivot man in a very unusual double play during a 4-2 Mets victory against the Dodgers at Shea Stadium. Racing in from the outfield, 'Le Grand Orange' gets a throw near second base from first baseman John Milner and tags Davey Lopes, who was picked-off from first and then throws the ball home to nail Tom Paciorek trying to score from second during the P-1B-SS-1B-2B-1B-2B-RF-C rundown.

National Pastime.com: Before the game, the Mets retire Gil Hodges' number 14 in tribute to their late manager, who died of a heart attack just before the start of the season. In addition to leading his underdog club to a World Championship in 1969, the quiet leader also hit the first home run in franchise history, a 1962 solo shot at Busch Stadium off St. Louis right-hander Larry Jackson.
