NY Post: Mets stifling Cubs to win another series dampened by Edwin Diaz ejection “What should have been a feel-good performance and nice segue into the Subway Series for the Mets turned into something of a demoralizing win Sunday night. Edwin Diaz was ejected upon entering for the bottom of the ninth inning at Wrigley Field after umpires inspected his right hand and deemed him in violation of MLB’s rules on sticky substances.”
Tim Healey Newsday: "Under the norms established by MLB since 2021, when it began enforcing its longstanding policy on doctoring baseballs, any sticky-stuff ejection comes with a 10-game suspension. The league is expected to announce that punishment for Diaz on Monday. He’ll be scheduled to sit out through July 5."
NY Post: Mets’ Edwin Diaz will ‘keep using the same thing’ despite sticky-stuff ejection.
Brian Joura Mets360: "Once again, the Mets used power to get the victory. Home runs by Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo and Mark Vientos led the way, with Lindor and Nimmo going back-to-back in the third inning. Vientos’ blast came to straight-away center field, officially a 451-foot homer."
Mets’ Luis Severino tosses strikeout-filled gem after rotation shuffle “Luis Severino may have been disappointed about getting bumped from a Subway Series start, but he didn’t let it affect his performance Sunday night. The Mets ace rebounded from a rough outing in Texas last week and pitched six shutout innings with a season-high 10 strikeouts…”

Brian Joura Mets360: "With MLB-quality defense, the Mets would have had the chance to win the game, 1-0. Instead, two balls fell to the ground that should have been caught and the Phillies won, 5-1, in the opening game of three in Philadelphia Friday night."
NY Post: Mets can’t get out of their own way, sink further with sloppy loss to Phillies. “The game was marred by a first-inning error from Brandon Nimmo, which led to an unearned run, and by Francisco Lindor bailing on a pop-up in the sixth that fell for an RBI single from Brandon Marsh. It was the third loss in a row and fifth in six games for the Mets, who fell to a season-high seven games under .500 (34-41).

The exchange quickly degenerates as P Jason Vargas also gets involved and threatens to knock out the journalist while Callaway shouts for him to leave the clubhouse, using choice profanities.
NY Post: "Callaway was bombarded with questions about his bullpen use prior to his run-in with Healey. Callaway opted to stick with a tiring Seth Lugo instead of going to closer Edwin Diaz in the eighth inning. Javier Baez proceeded to hit a game-deciding three-run homer off Lugo...'Mickey came out of his office, dressed, and I thought he was leaving for the day, so I said, ‘See you tomorrow, Mickey.’ And then he said, ‘Don’t be a smart-a–,' said Healey"

Mets fail to score in a double header loss. Cards scored in just one inning in each game of the sweep. Hank Webb allowed just one run in the 1st, allowing just 4 hits in 8 innings in a hard luck loss. In game two, after Mets starter George Stone (L,1-1) loaded the bases in the 8th, Yogi Berra brought in Jon Matlack in relief to face Ted Simmons. The strategy didn't work as Simmons hit a Grand Slam.

The Mets' outfielder, who thought of the stunt after being disappointed by the lack of attention Duke Snider's 400th round-tripper received, will be released two days later by manager Casey Stengel.
