Down 4-0, Mark Vientos doubled in two in the 6th and Brandon Nimmo's 2-run homer in the 7th tied it. After the Mets and Astros each played their ghost runner in the 10th, the Mets called on Matt Festa to pitch the 11th (his Mets debut). After a walk, 3 singles and a double, the Astros had a 10-5 lead and the eventual win. Matt Festa would not make another appearance for the Mets as he was DFA'd 3 days later.

Brian Joura Mets 360: 'It really seemed like this was going to be a happy recap. Carlos Carrasco looked really good for five innings, the Mets got strong middle relief and the offense did enough for a 4-2 lead. But an error by Pete Alonso – he failed to field the ball cleanly and then threw wild to the pitcher covering – led to David Robertson’s down fall."
NY Post: “Alonso made a key eighth-inning error, David Robertson followed by surrendering a go-ahead, three-run home run and the Mets absorbed one more gut-punch in a season of them — a 5-4 loss to the Giants that was witnessed at Citi Field by 30,116, who were enjoying a great Friday night, until it all went wrong. The Mets (36-46) are a season-worst 10 games under .500. They finished with a 7-19 record in a disastrous June and were without one series victory in the month.”
Newsday: "The Mets put the potential tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth, but Bailey threw out Starling Marte — freshly into the game as a pinch runner — trying to steal second for the second out of the inning. That snapped the Mets’ streak of successful steal attempts at 35, a franchise record."

NY Post: Mets demolished 20-2 by Braves, lose David Peterson to injury. “David Peterson departed the mound with the trainer in the fourth inning, ending a brutal performance. The left-hander exited with right side soreness.”
Mets.com: “New York jumped out to a two-run lead in the first at Truist Park, but Atlanta fired back early and often to hand the Mets a 20-2 loss. In a disastrous fourth inning, the Mets spent over half an hour in the field as the Braves sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven of them. Matters hardly improved from there, and the Mets allowed 20-plus runs for just the fourth time in franchise history.”
Brian Joura Mets360: “Either way, the blowout allowed the Mets to use Thomas Szapucki, although having him enter the game with runners on second and third probably isn’t the way the front office drew it up on the blackboard….The rookie was in the unenviable spot of having to take one for the team…”
