Mets:
  • Were swept for the first time this season...Had not been swept in their first 22 series of the season...Was just the fifth time in franchise history the Mets have opened a season with 22 consecutive series of two or more games without being swept joining the ‘91 team (29), the ‘06 team (25), the ‘86 team (25) and the ‘82 team (22)...Were last swept by the Mariners from August 9-11, 2024 at T-Mobile Park.
  • Have lost a season-high three straight games for just the second time this season (also: 5/18-20).
  • Were shut out for the fourth time this season (also: 4/9 vs. MIA, 5/14 vs. PIT and 5/20 at BOS).
  • Mets pitchers combined to allow a season-high nine walks.
  • Allowed seven or more runs in each game of the series...Was the first time that the Mets have allowed seven or more runs in three straight games since June 29 - July 1, 2024.
  • Are 30-39 all-time on Father's Day.
Luisangel Acuña: Reached base three times in a game for the fifth time this season (last: 5/4 (G1) at St. Louis.

Juan Soto: Drew three walks in a game for the fourth time this season...His 12 games with multiple walks are the most this season. Has a .507 OBP over his last 16 games dating back to May 30...Is the third-best mark in the majors during that span (min. 50 plate appearances).

Griffin Canning: Allowed a season-high six earned runs over 4.1 innings...Had allowed five or fewer runs in his previous 16 starts dating back to September 17, 2024...Did not allow an extra-base hit...Is the first Mets pitcher since Matt Harvey (9/8/15 at WAS) to allow six or more earned runs and not allow an ex-
tra-base hit in an outing.

Jared Young: Recorded the final out of the ninth inning in his first career MLB pitching appearance...Was the first Mets primary position player to pitch in a game since Eddy Alvarez, who threw 1.0 scoreless inning in relief on September 20, 2024 vs. Philadelphia.

Brett Baty: Left today's game due to right groin tightness...Is considered day-to-day.

Sean Manaea: Threw 56 pitches in his third rehab appearance with the Brooklyn Cyclones...Marked his most pitches thrown in his rehab assignment thus far.

Newsday: "The team with the majors’ best ERA and the National League’s best record was in need of a well-pitched game against the Rays after the relievers failed to provide much relief in the opener and after Tylor Megill’s start didn’t end well in Game 2. Griffin Canning didn’t give the Mets what they were seeking in the series finale. Nor did the bullpen. And the hitters took Father’s Day off."

NY PostGriffin Canning’s control problems proved the main driver behind Sunday’s defeat, with the pitcher doing most of Tampa’s damage for it as Canning walked five batters, threw a wild pitch and surrendered a series of infield hits on his way to giving up six runs in 4 ²/₃ innings.

Brian Joura Mets360: "You know it’s a bad offensive day when your hitting star is Luisangel Acuna, who had two of the team’s five hits and also drew a walk. Juan Soto had three walks but flied out with the bases loaded to end the game. Pete Alonso came up with six runners on base and went 0-4, with two strikeouts and a double play. The only reason it wasn’t worse was that Soto ended the game before he could strand three more."

After an off day today, the Mets travel to Atlanta for 3 games against the Braves, followed by a three game road trip versus the Phillies, a 4 game homestand against the Braves and a 3-game road trip against the Pirates.

NY Post: Kodai Senga’s early injury timeline revealed as Mets struggle without ace. "Senga is now expected to miss at least five weeks after suffering the Grade 1 (low grade) hamstring strain in the Mets’ 4-3 win over the Nationals on Thursday, The Post’s Jon Heyman reported. That would mean that Senga, the National League’s ERA leader, would not be available until sometime just before MLB’s All-Star break in mid-July."

1997

At Yankee Stadium, the Mets beat their crosstown rivals, 6-0, in the first-ever regular-season game between the two teams. Dave Mlicki throws a complete-game shutout, blanking the Bronx Bombers on nine hits. You Tube Link.

2003

Dontrelle Willis throws a complete-game one-hit shutout in the Marlins' 1-0 win over the Mets at Pro Player Stadium. The D-Train's victory, which improves his record to 6-1, marks the start of the baseball world taking notice of the high-kicking southpaw phenom, who goes on to win the Rookie of the Year.

Baseball Reference:

2010: The Mets continue their roller-coaster season, winning their 6th in a row with an 8 - 4 decision over Cleveland. All nine Mets starters collect at least one hit and either score or drive in a run. Shelley Duncan, making a rare start in LF for the Indians, helps out with some poor defensive play but does atone himself somewhat with a two-run homer off winner Jon Niese.

2011: The Braves beat the Mets, 9 - 8, on an anticlimactic play in the 10th inning. After rallying from two runs down in the bottom of the 9th on Brooks Conrad's two-run homer off closer Francisco Rodriguez, the Braves take advantage of a balk by reliever D.J. Carrasco that allows Diory Hernandez to score the winning run. Before coming back, the Braves blow a 6 - 2 lead by giving up a four-run 5th inning to the Mets. Chipper Jones drives in 5 runs, tying a career best.

2013Seemingly asleep for 8 innings, the Mets suddenly wake up in the bottom of the 9th as Carlos Marmol is trying to protect a 3 - 0 lead for the CubsMarlon Byrd starts off the inning with a solo homer, Lucas Duda draws a walk and John Buck singles. Omar Quintanilla bunts both runners into scoring position before Kirk Nieuwenhuis, hitting .097 for the season, connects for a walk-off three-run homer. Marmol is only pitching because closer Kevin Gregg, who has been perfect in 10 save opportunities so far, is unavailable after pitching in the Cubbies' last four games.
