Ron Taylor
FLUSHING, N.Y., June 16, 2025 – Dr. Ron Taylor, one of the unsung heroes of the 1969 Miracle Mets, died today at the age of 87 in Toronto after a lengthy illness.
The right-handed reliever led the Mets with 59 appearances and 13 saves in 1969. He had a 9-4 record and a 2.72 ERA. Taylor pitched for the Mets from 1967-1971.
“Ron was the only guy on our staff with postseason experience,” recalled teammate Art Shamsky. “He had won a championship with the Cardinals in 1964 and brought a winning mentality. We don’t win the title without Ron Taylor.”
Taylor saved Game 2 of the World Series when he retired Baltimore’s Brooks Robinson with two on in the bottom of the ninth. That gave the Mets a 2-1 win and evened the series at 1-1. He pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in the World Series.
In the National League Championship Series vs Atlanta, he earned the save in Game 1 and picked up the win in Game 2.
Dr. Ron Taylor went on to become the team physician for the Blue Jays for over three decades. He is in the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.
