Brian Joura Mets 360: "If you’re a Pirates fan who likes home runs, this was the game for you! Pittsburgh cracked seven homers en route to a 14-2 win over the Mets Friday night."
Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Jeff McNeil homer in the 3rd and a Jose Iglesias groundout that brought in Pete Alonso from 3rd in the 4th. Pirates homered twice in the bottom of the 4th to tie it and jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the 5th on a 2 run homer by Bryan Reynolds to take the led for good.
NY Post: Mets’ pitchers implode in ugly loss as Pirates crush seven homers. "The Mets had such a bad night that the home team didn’t have enough [fireworks] to continue celebrating...Diekman entered after Severino loaded the bases in the seventh with the Mets behind 4-2. The struggling left-hander surrendered a grand slam to Bryan Reynolds that essentially made the eighth-inning carnage a moot point."
Tim Healey Newsday: Mets blown out by Pirates after Luis Severino's worst start of season. "In another winnable game, they trailed by two in the seventh inning. But the bullpen gave up 10 runs in less than two frames, allowing the situation to deteriorate to such an extent that manager Carlos Mendoza turned to a position player for the last out of the eighth."

NY Post: Francisco Alvarez’s homer in ninth, Kodai Senga’s gem propel Mets to comeback win "“With two outs in the ninth inning Wednesday night, the game was just getting started for the Mets, who rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Diamondbacks at Chase Field, extending their winning streak to four games. Alvarez’s tying homer and Mark Canha’s subsequent RBI triple resurrected a team that, beyond its starting pitcher, barely had shown a pulse all night. Kodai Senga fired eight dominant innings and matched a career high with 12 strikeouts, but was in position for the loss as Alvarez faced a full-count pitch from lefty Andrew Chafin with two outs in the ninth. Alvarez hit a fly to right that kept going for his 15th homer of the season and his second in as many games.”

It was the Reds' fourth hit of the game. Tyler Naquin was walked intentionally before Donovan Solano walked to load the bases. Moustakas’ deep fly ball to center drove in Pham with the game-winner.”

Today, he hits two homers and drives in 4 runs as New York shuts out the Dodgers, 6 - 0, giving him a .347 average and 17 RBI in his last 18 games. Baseball Reference: 2010: Joey Votto, in competition for the last spot on the National League All-Star team, hits two solo home runs in the Reds' 8 - 6 win over the Mets. The game features the ejection of Mets manager Jerry Manuel, who complains over a ruling that Scott Rolen is hit by a Mike Pelfrey pitch with the bases loaded in the 5th, scoring the go-ahead run. Manuel argues that the ball tipped Rolen's bat, but is tossed when he tries to press his case. Drew Stubbs and Corky Miller follow with two-run hits each, then pitcher Travis Wood hits a triple to make it 7 - 1. The Mets counter with 5 runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, but never manage to catch up.

National Pastime.com: Game 1: At Shea Stadium, 20 year-old outfielder Ron Swoboda, in-route to finishing the season with 19, breaks the franchise record for home runs hit by a rookie when he goes deep off Dick Ellsworth in the first inning with a three-run homer, a poke that will provide all of the runs the Mets will score in their 3-2 victory over Chicago. Jim Hickman had established the mark with 13 round-trippers in 1962, the club's inaugural season.

Baseball Reference: 1963 - With 2 outs and 2 strikes, Pirates right fielder Roberto Clemente lines a tie-breaking 2-run homer into the right field upper deck at the Polo Grounds, putting Pittsburgh ahead to stay, 3 - 1, against the New York Mets. While the shot is not a tape-measure one, it is remarkable that the pitch almost hit Clemente in the head. Maury Allen reports it thus: "'I was trying to waste a pitch', Tracy Stallard said. 'I figured if maybe I could get him to swing again at a pitch around his head.' So Stallard threw a real pitch to Clemente, the kind any human being hitter would duck away from and scream for the umpire. Naturally, Clemente hit it upstairs."
