NY Post: Mets ride clutch Jeff McNeil homer to tense winover Yankees in Subway Series opener. “Jeff McNeil’s two-run homer off ex-Met Michael Tonkin in the sixth inning proved to be the difference…The drama built to a crescendo in the bottom of the ninth. After Edwin Diaz pitched two of the previous three days …the Mets turned to lefty Jake Diekman with two lefties leading off. He got Trent Grisham to fly out before walking Juan Soto on four pitches.  Diekman then went on the attack against Judge and in a 2-2 count, caught him looking at a 96 mph fastball dotted on the inside corner for strike three.”

NY Post: Carlos Carrasco, Mets suffer disastrous loss to Red Sox as trade deadline inches closer. “Carlos Carrasco was extremely hittable and didn’t even survive through the third inning, but the veteran right-hander was only part of the Mets’ problem.  There was also the matter of a lineup that had chances, particularly late in the game, and failed to produce against the Red Sox in a 6-1 loss at Fenway Park…The Red Sox managed seven straight hits against Carrasco and Drew Smith in the third to score four runs and extend their lead to 5-0.”

Davis singles in Pete Alonso and puts men on 1st and 3rd with 2 out but Tomas Nido pops up to end it.

After allowing a hit and a walk in his first two innings, the rookie retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced, with five total strikeouts…The Mets scored their only runs off former teammate Steven Matz in the first inning, when Brandon Nimmo drew a leadoff walk and Pete Alonso -- who later blasted a 450-foot shot to the second deck in left-center in the eighth -- followed with the first of his two homers.”

NY Post: Mets avoid no-hitter but not humiliation as Kershaw crushes. “Hey, they broke up a perfect game in the seventh…Kershaw, perfect through six innings, ran his scoreless streak to 29 consecutive innings with a three-hit, 11-strikeout, no-walk, 3-0 complete-game win Thursday at Citi Field…[Bartolo] Colon yielded a solo homer to Jimmy Rollins in the third inning and then Kershaw took it from there, notching his third straight game with double-digit strikeouts.”

After the Dodgers took a 3-0 lead in the 1st off Pedro Martinez (W,12-3) the Mets came right back to get two of their own as Mike Cameron and David Wright each drove in runs on infield hits.  In the 7th, Jose Reyes tripled in Marlon Anderson and Carlos Beltran singled in Reyes to take a 6-5 lead.  Roberto Hernandez and Braden Looper were each perfect over the last two innings to seal the win.

In the 1st inning of the nitecap, Dante Bichette, Andres Galarraga and Vinny Castilla hit consecutive homers off Pete Harnisch. Galarraga hits another in the 3rd, one of his six hits for the day.
