Mike Puma NY Post: Luis Torrens plays hero in Mets’ win over Pirates to snap three-game skid. "In addition to his bases-loaded double that accounted for the Mets’ scoring in the third, he singled and scored as part of a two-run sixth."
Tim Healey Newday Mets' Francisco Alvarez has a sore elbow, but Luis Torrens fills in just fine. "[Torrens] three-run double with two outs in the top of the third saved the Mets from blowing what would have been a third primo scoring opportunity in as many innings...Alvarez said he was sore but mostly fine after his left elbow absorbed a 99-mph fastball from Paul Skenes on Friday."
Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: "What a difference a closer makes. After a few days of bullpen blowups, Edwin Diaz returned from his 10-game suspension Saturday, immediately shutting the door on the Pittsburgh Pirates to help the Mets win 5-2 at PNC Park. Diaz hit the first batter he faced, but struck out the second and got Andrew McCutchen to ground into a double play for his eighth save of the season."

Rod Kanehl, appearing as a pinch-hitter, hits the first grand slam in Mets history, going deep off Bobby Shantz in the eighth inning of the team's 10-3 victory over the Cardinals at the Polo Grounds. The bases loaded round-tripper comes in the 79th game of the franchise's existence.
In a rare Mets victory, Gil Hodges goes deep off Redbird hurler Ray Sadecki for his 370th and final home run of his career, finishing tenth on the all-time list and with the most round-trippers ever hit by a right-handed batter in the National League. In attendance at the Polo Grounds contest is eight year-old Howie Rose, the future Mets radio voice watching his first major league game, and Ralph Kiner, the play-by-play announcer for the expansion team, who will have the quiet first baseman on his postgame show, Kiner'S Korner, reminding his guest that the right-handed NL home run mark had been established by him in 1954.
