Abbey Mastracco New York Daily News: "The Mets (54-41) haven’t made things easy on themselves offensively over the last few weeks, and one day after being swept in a doubleheader in Baltimore, the Royals (46-49) kept the Mets to only one run over the first seven innings — a bases-loaded walk drawn by Pete Alonso in the top of the third."

Laura Albanese Newsday: "The Mets were trailing 3-1 in the eighth when Royals reliever Steven Cruz loaded the bases with none out, allowing a single by Brandon Nimmo and back-to-back walks to Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto...closer Carlos Estevez struck out Pete Alonso swinging to bring up Vientos...Vientos, who was batting .119 in his previous 13 games, muscled Estevez’s 2-and-2 slider off the end of the bat the other way for a three-run double that gave the Mets a 4-3 lead.

Mike Puma NY Post: "The Mets widened the gulf in the ninth on Francisco Lindor’s three-run homer. Juan Soto followed with his 22nd homer of the season."

AP News: "Kodai Senga returned from the injured list to make his first start in since leaving a June 12 start with a right hamstring strain. Working on a pitch limit, Senga threw four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks, striking out four."

From the Mets 7 Nationals 0 Post Game Notes - 7/11/2024:

  • Brandon Nimmo:
    • Put the Mets on the board with a bases-clearing double in the fifth.
  • J.D. Martinez:
    • Hit an RBI single in the fifth...Also doubled in the fourth for the Mets first hit of the game.
  • Phil Maton (1.0 IP, 2 K): Threw 1.0 scoreless inning in his Mets debut...Has allowed one run over his last 12.1 innings.

Brian Joura Mets360: "Mets pitchers allowed six hits and five walks, plus they hit three batters. But with the Nats going 1-12 with RISP – and that hit not driving in a run – the Mets picked up their first shutout of the year with a 7-0 whitewashing of Washington Thursday afternoon. The win gave the Mets a sweep of the Nationals and upped their record to 23-10 in their last 33 games."

NY Post: David Peterson continues to help keep Mets rotation afloat with another strong start.  "With runners on the corners before an out was recorded in the second inning, David Peterson was in need of a strikeout. Or three. The lefty starter fanned the next three batters to thwart the biggest threat he faced amid his latest strong outing for the Mets, as Peterson tossed six shutout innings in a 7-0 win Thursday over the Nationals at Citi Field."

NY Post: Mets suffer one of their worst losses as bullpen crumbles. "Asked to retire five batters, Diaz got to four before wilting in the ninth, sending the Mets into the All-Star break with a gut-wrenching 6-5 loss to the Pirates. Diaz surrendered two-out RBI singles to John Nogowski and Wilmer Difo in suffering his second blown save of the season. The Mets, who had squandered a five-run lead, then went quietly in the bottom of the ninth to finish with a split in the four-game series against an underwhelming cellar dweller."
