Tim Healey Newsday: Carlos Mendoza's hook of Christian Scott backfires in Mets' loss to Pirates. "The finale against Pittsburgh (43-47) turned immediately after Mendoza’s decision to pull rookie righthander Christian Scott, who had largely sailed through 5 2⁄3 innings on 77 pitches. After Oneil Cruz’s home run in the fourth, he retired seven consecutive batters."

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets completely fall apart in loss to Pirates after Carlos Mendoza’s questionable Christian Scott decision. "The flurry after Carlos Mendoza removed his starter included a walk, three singles (two of which weren’t hit particularly hard), double, error, wild pitch and homer...Mendoza said it was decided before the game that the rookie Scott, pitching on four days’ rest for the first time in his career, would be held to 75 pitches. Especially given that Scott had thrown 99 pitches in his last outing."

Brian Joura Mets 360: "Because of Carlos Mendoza’s penchant for removing starters too soon – whether that was David Peterson on Saturday or Sean Manaea on Sunday or Christian Scott in this game – the Mets are asking too much out of their bullpen."

Then, after getting the next out on a fly ball to right, Heilman inexcusably walked Jack Wilson to load the bases…[Braden] Looper got ahead 0-2 on Tike Redman, but…On the 11th pitch [of the at-bat], Redman grounded a two-run single up the middle…Matt Lawton’s liner to left…went under [Cliff] Floyd’s glove and to the wall, and Wilson and Redman scored to tie the game…In the 10th…With one out, Rob Mackowiak hit a slow grounder to Miguel Cairo at second. Cairo made a hard throw to first that sailed past Jose Offerman for a two-base error…A groundout and an intentional walk later, Humberto Cota lined a walk-off single to left, scoring Mackowiak to end it.”

National Pastime.comThe Yankees sweep their crosstown rivals in the first double-ballpark doubleheader since 1903 with identical 4-2 scores, in an afternoon tilt at Shea and an evening contest at Yankee Stadium. The twin bill provides quite an interesting day in New York when Mike Piazza, beaned by Roger Clemens, goes to the hospital, Dwight Gooden gets his first win at the Flushing Meadows ballpark since 1994, and a bizarre obstruction call on Mets' first baseman Todd Zeile causes the team to play first game under protest.

National Pastime.com: At Shea Stadium, Don Young is roundly criticized by Cubs' teammate Ron Santo for his two misplays in center field that help the Mets score three ninth-inning runs, resulting in a 4-3 walk-off victory and cutting Chicago's division lead to four games over the surging New York team. The emotional third baseman will apologize for his remarks tomorrow but will be soundly booed by the hometown fans in his first game back at Wrigley Field.
