Mike Puma NY Post: Juan Soto’s gutsy baserunning pays off in huge spot as Mets sneak by Reds to avoid sweep. “The Reds had the infield drawn in with one out and runners on second and third. Soto, running on contact, broke from third base on Luis Torrens’ sharp grounder to second baseman Matt McLain and slid headfirst across the plate just ahead of Tyler Stephenson’s swipe tag for the go-ahead run in a 3-2 victory over the Reds at Citi Field.” 

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: "A one-run lead is never enough for the Mets’ bullpen, and Edwin Diaz gave up the tying run trying for a four-out save in the top of the eighth inning. But after the Mets took back a one-run lead in the eighth, Ryne Stanek was able to protect it for the save (two), helping secure a 3-2 win to salvage a series against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field." 

Ben Dickson Newsday: "The Mets (56-44) seemingly survived an injury scare after Pete Alonso did not start Sunday’s game with a right hand contusion. The first baseman, who entered Sunday with a franchise-record streak of 353 consecutive games played, came in as a defensive replacement for Mark Vientos in the seventh to keep that streak alive. Mendoza said Alonso’s injury is “on the base of the thumb area.” X-rays were negative."

David Peterson (6.0 IP, 4 H, R, BB, 4 K, HP): Is 5-0 with a 1.91 (13 ER/61.1 IP) ERA over 10 home starts...Ranks third in the majors in home ERA (min. 50.0 IP)...Has not allowed more than three runs in each of his 10 starts at Citi Field this season and has allowed one or zero earned runs in each of his last four starts. 

Luisangel Acuña (1-1, 2B, RBI, BB): Laced an RBI double in the fifth to put the Mets up 2-1...Marked his first extra-base hit since May 2 at St. Louis (77 at-bats) and his first RBI since May 9 vs. Chicago-NL (63 at-bats).

NY Post Sports+: This Mets offense isn’t good enough “Hitting in the clutch has been a season-long problem. The Mets rank 28th in baseball in batting average with runners in scoring position (.230). Their .726 OPS in such situations ranks 18th. Overall, they are 16th in runs scored (435). Lately, though, they have really struggled. Since June 13, they are averaging 3.74 runs per game. NY Post: Mets can’t secure White Sox sweep in JoseQuintana’s debut. “Quintana, in his Mets debut following rib surgery that had kept him sidelined since spring training, allowed two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts, and departed after 77 pitches…The White Sox took control against Drew Smith in the sixth inning by scoring four runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits, an error and a walk.”

Tim Healey Newsday: For at least a night, the Mets ran out of magic. The Reds’ Wade Miley held them to two runs in 6 1/3 innings. Pete Alonso homered, but Cincinnati countered with long balls from Jonathan India in the first, then Joey Votto and Aristides Aquino back-to-back in the third inning. The Mets (49-43) stranded the potential tying run on second base in the seventh and eighth innings and on first base in the ninth inning. 

Mets.com: Stat of Day: Pete elite through 300 games. Pete Alonso hit his 88th career homer in his 300th career game on Tuesday, giving him the second most in AL/NL history through the first 300 games of a career. Ryan Howard holds the record with 91 homers through his first 300 games.

NY Post: Pete Alonso awakes Mets bats for win they badly needed. “The Mets first baseman, who Saturday arrived in a slump and was deemed in need of rest, spent the first five innings on the bench before entering as a pinch-hitter in the sixth…“’ call it a mental health day,’ Alonso said after smashing a three-run homer that helped the Mets end a two-game skid with an 11-4 victory at Oracle Park. ‘It was a great mental health day’…Dominic Smith, Jeff McNeil and Todd Frazier also homered, allowing right-hander Walker Lockett to win his first major league game. Smith finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs.”

The long weekend after the All-Star break in Houston comes to an end as the Mets drop 3 out of 4 with an extra inning loss in the final game.  After the Astros scored 4 in the 8th off Doug Sisk in the 8th to take an 8-5 lead, the Mets came right back to tie it at 8 in the 9th with pinch hitter Ed Hearn singling in the tying run.  Rick Anderson then threw 3 scoreless innings and Roger McDowell (L,7-4) another 3 when the 'Stros loaded the bases in the 15th.  Bill Doran beat the throw home on a Kevin Bass ground ball to Keith Hernandez to 1st.

1978 was a tough year but this day - a midweek day double header told a different story.  In Game one the Mets scored 7 in the first two innings to support Mike Bruhert (W,2-5) 6 innings, 4 runs.  Skip Lockwood with a 3 scoreless inning Save to seal it.  In the nightcap, Willie Montanez singled in Tim Foli to tie it and in the 11th Joel Youngblood singled in Montanez to win it.
