NY Post: Mets bullpen collapses after Sean Manaea’s strongstart in rough loss to Reds. “They limited Sean Manaea’s pitch count — again — and turned over a one-run lead in the fifth to a 28-year-old rookie, then got almost nothing out of their inconsistent offense until two outs in the bottom of the ninth, as they opened the second half with an 8-4 loss Friday night.”
Newsday: Mets open second half with bad loss to Reds as AlexCarrillo serves up three home runs. “Manaea exited with the Mets owning a 2-1 lead, but righthander Alex Carrillo, making only his third appearance of the season and first at home, quickly surrendered it. He allowed five earned runs and three homers, walked two and hit a batter in 1 1⁄3 innings, exiting with a 6-2 deficit in the sixth.”
NY Daily News: With so many starters on restrictive pitch counts, the bullpen has to cover 4-5 innings every night. Mendoza said he wanted to give looks to Carrillo and Waddell, but it’s difficult to be able to give extended looks to pitchers like them at this time of year when the standings matter.
Brian Joura Mets360: "It was 8-2 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Mets staged a rally. Aided by an error, the Mets put across two runs and had the bases loaded. But Francisco Lindor popped up – whoda thunk it? – to end the game. Lindor, Mark Vientos and Pete Alonso went a combined 0-13 with 3 Ks and it’s tough to win when your 1-2-4 hitters perform that poorly."

"In his second-worst start of the season, Colon allowed seven earned runs on eight hits with three walks and a hit batter over 4 ¹/₃ innings. The Cardinals turned the game into a runaway in the fifth, when Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer against reliever Carlos Torres that made it 8-0. The Mets sweep their second double header against the Astros in two days! In Game 1, the Mets break a 1-1 tie with 3 in the 8th as Billy Murphy singles in Chuck Hiller to put the Mets up and Roy McMillian singles in two for some insurance. Jack Hamilton (W,5-9) throws two scoreless innings in relief for the win.
Mets employ some late inning magic again in Game 2 as they score 4 in the 7th to take a 6-3 lead on 5 hits and a hit-by-pitch. Ed Kranepool's RBI single puts the Mets up 4-3 and Larry Elliot's double scored Kranepool and Al Luplow for the final 2 runs. Bob Shaw (W,7-8) allows 3 runs, 1 ER, in 7 innings of work. Jack Hamilton has two more scoreless innings for his 9th Save.

Braves sweep a double header from the Mets by scoring 5 in each game. Mets only managed 1 run on Chuck Hiller's homer against Tony Cloninger (W,11-8) in the first who went the distance. Eddie Matthews with a pair of Game 1 homers for the Braves. Mets came out swinging in Game 2 with 3 runs in the first on Charley Smith's RBI single and Bobby Klaus' 2-run double. Braves came right back and tied it with 3 in the 2nd and added 2 more in the 3rd on a 2-run homer by Gene Oliver. Tug McGraw pitched scoreless innings in relief to give the Mets a chance but Dick Kelley retired the last 13 Mets in a row to lock down the Braves win.
