ESPN: Bobby Bonilla Day: New York Mets pay him $1.19M every July 1. "In 2000, the Mets agreed to buy out the remaining $5.9 million on Bonilla's contract. However, instead of paying Bonilla the $5.9 million at the time, the Mets agreed to make annual payments of nearly $1.2 million for 25 years starting July 1, 2011, including a negotiated 8% interest."

Mike Puma NY Post Sports+: Eric Chavez tells The Post what’s behind Mets’ brutal hitting woes. “It just needs to get better,” Chavez told The Post. “You kind of think there’s too many good hitters and players for us to underperform as a group. But it’s like, we’re halfway through the season and you would like to say, ‘Oh, it’s going to turn,’ and you think it’s going to turn, but at some point … you just don’t want to ever overreact and go too hard and make drastic changes, so it’s timing is everything. Working with [president of baseball operations] David [Stearns], the one thing he has shown me is to have patience. I don’t have it. I am more of an overreactor where I want things hammered down. But as far as addressing it, the players know. They know we’re better than this as a group.”  (Subscription required)

Mike Vaccaro NY Post Sports+: Anatomy of the Mets’ free fall: How season spiraled so fast — and why there’s still hope. "If there was one good — and real — thing that came from the Mets remarkable run across the first 69 games, it’s that they bought themselves enough time to absorb a crash like this and still survive." (Subscription required)

Laura Albanese Newsday: Mets' Juan Soto talks plate discipline, players' only meeting and more in exclusive interview. "But while there's a natural pressure to living up to the biggest contract in North American sports history, Soto’s game remains centered on patience. And in a stretch where the Mets are swooning — they’ve lost 13 of their last 16 going into Tuesday night's series opener against the Brewers at Citi Field — that type of consistency is important."

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Mets at the halfway point: What you should and shouldn’t panic about. Abbey suggests that we panic about the starting pitching, don't panic about the bullpen and coaching staff, mild panic about Francisco Lindor's slump, and do panic about the National League saying; "The Mets can’t control what other teams do and don’t do, but if San Diego and San Francisco load up at the trade deadline, it could get tougher to fend off competition in a Wild Card race."

Danny Abriano SNY.TV: Mets vs. Brewers: 5 things to watch and series predictions. Danny includes: "The Mets' starting rotation has been a big issue", "Can Mark Vientos shake off the rust?", "The Brewers have been hot [winners of their last 8 of 10], "When are the reinforcements coming?...Sean Manaea...is expected to make another rehab start this week."

Press Release: Tong, Benge Selected to 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game "Tong, the Mets #4 prospect and #92 prospect in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects, is having a spectacular year with the Rumble Ponies. Tong leads all of minor league baseball with 115 strikeouts and is second in the minors with a 1.73 ERA in 14 starts...Benge, the Mets #3 prospect and #81 prospect in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100, was promoted to Binghamton on June 23 after a terrific start to the year with High-A Brooklyn. Benge slashed .302/.417/.480 with an .897 OPS in 60 games with the Cyclones. He also had 68 hits, 37 RBIs, and four home runs with Brooklyn."

Although the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League will not have an official All-Star Game until 1946, two teams, one composed of South Bend Blue Sox and Rockford Peaches players and the other made up of players from the Kenosha Comets and Racine Belles, put on an exhibition game under the lights at Wrigley Field. The AAGPBL contest is the first night game ever played in the historic Chicago ballpark.

1973At Wrigley Field, the Mets edge the Cubs, 6 - 5, in the first game of a doubleheader. Then it is the Cubs' turn, as Randy Hundley bangs a 9th inning 3-run homer to give Chicago the 6 - 5 edge. Ron Santo has seven hits for the afternoon, five in the nitecap.
