Norfolk, VA - The Syracuse Mets won another series thanks to an 8-6 victory over the Norfolk Tides on Sunday afternoon. The Mets won two of the three games they played against the Tides this weekend, and Syracuse has now won all four series the Mets have played in the second half of the season.
Syracuse (46-50) jumped on top in the top of the first inning. Gilberto Celestino singled and stole second base. Francisco Alvarez followed with a monstrous two-run home run over the batter's eye in center field to give Syracuse a 2-0 lead. That home run was the sixth for Alvarez in his last 16 plate appearances.
The Mets added a run in the second and two in the top of the fourth. In the second, David Villar led off with a home run to left field for a 3-0 edge. Then in the fourth, Drew Gilbert had a one-out single, Luke Ritter had a two-out single, and Yonny Hernandez brought both runners home with a two-out triple for a 5-0 Syracuse advantage.
Norfolk (38-54) stormed back over the next three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Jeremiah Jackson led off with a solo home run to make it a 5-1 game. Vimael Machin then walked, moved to second on a José Barrero groundout, and Machin scored on an Emmanuel Rivera single to trim the deficit to three, 5-2.
In the sixth, Jackson singled, stole second, and moved to third base on a throwing error. After back-to-back pop outs, the inning continued with a Terrin Vavra walk. Rivera then collected his second two-out RBI single, scoring Jackson to make it a 5-3 ballgame. TT Bowens followed with a go-ahead, three-run home run to give the Tides a 6-5 edge.
Syracuse regained the lead in the eighth. Villar singled, and Ritter walked. Omar De Los Santos then pinch ran for Villar at second base. Yonny Hernandez laid down a bunt and reached first safely thanks to a poor throw which loaded the bases. Matt O'Neill tied the game with a single to right field, scoring Omar De Los Santos to make it a 6-6 game. José Azocar then hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to bring home Ritter for a 7-6 Syracuse lead.
The Mets added an insurance run in the ninth. Joey Meneses led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored later in the inning with two outs when Luis De Los Santos singled to center field for an 8-6 Syracuse advantage.
After an off day on Monday, Syracuse returns home to begin a six-game series on Tuesday against the Omaha Storm Chasers. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
