Mike Puma NY Post: Paul Blackburn delivers strong first impression as Mets begin road trip with win. "The right-hander cruised with an efficiency that Mets starting pitchers have often lacked this season, helping his new team roll to a 5-1 victory over the Angels to start a 10-game road trip that includes four cities."

Brian Joura Mets360: "Blackburn gave up six hits, two walks and a hit batter in his six innings yet it seemed like more than that. Still, he didn’t get rattled and threw enough strikes to keep his fielders engaged. The Mets turned two really nice double plays in the game that kept the Angels at bay."

Tim Healey Newsday: "The offensive highlight: a go-ahead two-run home run in the third inning from Pete Alonso, his third homer in five games."

Year: 2023; Game # 107; Wednesday, Aug 2; NYM 0 @ KCR;4; boxscore;  WP: Ragans;  LP: Senga;   Time: 2:35; NIGHT; Attendance: 13,630; Record: 50-57; Standings: 4; Games up/behind: 19.5; L

NY Post: Kodai Senga’s biggest adversary Wednesday night wasn’t so much the Royals lineup as it was a wet mound. Rain left the dirt around the pitching rubber just damp enough to affect the Mets right-hander’s footing and cause caking in his spikes. By the time Senga seemed to have managed the situation, he had buried the Mets in a three-run hole from which they never recovered in a 4-0 loss at Kauffman Stadium…Reliever Phil Bickford, in his Mets debut, allowed a solo homer in the eighth to Drew Waters.”

Year: 2022; Game#103; Tuesday  Aug 2 NYM 1 @ WSN; 5; boxscore;  WP: Arano; LP: Nogosek; Time: 2:48; NIGHT; Attendance: 29,878;  Record: 65-38; Standings: 1; Games up/behind: up 2.5; L;

NY Post: Mets waste Jacob deGrom’s triumphant return in lossto Nationals.  “The Mets’ seven-game winning streak concluded with a 5-1 loss to Washington only hours after the Nationals gutted their major league roster in a trade that sent Juan Soto and Josh Bell to San Diego.  DeGrom was removed after five innings and 59 pitches and took a no-decision. He allowed one earned run on three hits with six strikeouts, topping out at 102 mph. His previous appearance in the regular season for the Mets had come on July 7, 2021. This season, he was shut down during spring training with a stress reaction in his right scapula and didn’t resume throwing from a mound until June.”

ESPN.com: DeGrom dazzles in return, bullpen costs Mets inloss to Nats. “Mets reliever Stephen Nogosek (0-1) took the loss after allowing a two-run homer to Luis Garcia and a solo shot to Yadiel Hernandez in the sixth. Yoan López also gave up a homer in the seventh, when he got big help from center fielder Brandon Nimmo on a diving catch to end the inning.”

Year: 2021; Game#106; Monday  Aug 2 NYM 3 @ MIA; 6; boxscore;  WP: Luzardo; LP: Megill;  Save: Floro; Time: 3:11; NIGHT; Attendance: 8,771;  Record: 56-50; Standings: 1; Games up/behind: up 3.0; L;

NY Post: "Tylor Megill didn’t have a rough start as much as a bad four-batter sequence, but given the state of this listless Mets lineup it was just about game, set, match after just four Marlins had batted Monday night. Lewis Brinson smacked a first-inning grand slam, and the Mets spent the next eight innings trying to recover. They never got there in a 6-3 loss at loanDepot park to begin a seven-game road trip. After allowing three earned runs total in five July starts, the rookie Megill returned to earth. He surrendered five runs, four earned, on six hits over five innings as the Mets lost for the fourth time in five games and fell to 8-10 since the All-Star break."

ESPN.com: "Pete Alonso hit his 24th homer, a solo blast in the third, for the Mets, who are 8-10 since the All-Star break...The Mets reduced the early deficit, scoring twice in the second. Báez walked, advanced to third on J.D. Davis’ single and raced home on Luzardo’s wild pitch. Drury’s two-out double scored Davis...Down 5-3, New York loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth before Miami reliever Dylan Floro came on and got Brandon Drury on a fielder’s choice."

Year: 2020; Game #10; Sunday;  Aug 2, NYM 0 @ ATL; 4; boxscore;  WP: Matzek; LP: Peterson; Time: 3:06; DAY;  Record: 3-7; Standings: 5; Games up/behind: 4; L;

Braves 4 Mets 0. David Peterson (L,1-1) 6 innings, 3 runs, 3 earned runs, 5 hits, 1 walk, 8K, 87 pitches – 54 strikes; Edwin Diaz 1 inning, 1 BB, 1 K; Drew Smith 1 inning, 1 run, 1 earned run, 2 hits; Jeff McNeil 3 for 5 , 2 Ks; Amed Rosario, 2 for 4;  Robinson Cano 1 for 4, 2 Ks; J.D. Davis, 1 for 4, 2 Ks; ; Pete Alonso, 0 for 5 – now hitting .175, 3Ks, 6 LOB; Brandon Nimmo 0 for 3 with 2 walks.

SNY.TV: Mets takeaways from Sunday's 4-0 loss to Braves, including lack of clutch hitting with runners on. New York went 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on.

NY Post: Mets’ slump continues amid Yoenis Cespedes fiasco. Without the struggling and oft-injured 34-year-old slugger, the Mets didn’t perform any better. They actually out-hit the Braves, 10-7, but continued to be inept in big spots. Pete Alonso, looking completely out of sorts — he’s in a 1-for-16 slump with seven strikeouts over his past four games — failed three times with runners in scoring position. Robinson Cano and Tomas Nido each grounded into killer inning-ending double plays with multiple men on base.

Brian Joura Mets360,com: “David Peterson gave a Quality Start, going 6 IP with 3 ER, 1 BB and 8 Ks. Unfortunately, the one walk came with the bases loaded. Still, it was a solid effort from a guy who didn’t exactly dominate Double-A last year. He certainly deserves another start.”

NY Post: Mets dump Nats for monumental sweep, move into1st-place tie. “Amid pennant-race energy and enthusiasm that flowed from every nook and cranny of the ballpark, Curtis Granderson, Murphy and the hottest home run hitter on the planet, or at least in Queens, Duda, all homered five pitches apart in a five-run Mets third inning. When that carnage was done, the Mets gathered behind rookie Noah Syndergaard for a 5-2 nationally televised victory, the series sweep of the Nationals Sunday and a virtual share of first place in the NL East.”

ESPN.com: “Noah Syndergaard (W,6-5) struck out nine over eight innings, and New York pulled within percentage points of the first-place Nationals in the NL East. Boosted by a trio of lively crowds, the Mets completed their first three-game sweep of Washington since May 2009 and boldly pronounced themselves legitimate contenders.”
