Brian Joura Mets360: "The starting pitching hasn’t been great but the hitting has been wildly inconsistent, with a big outing every now and then gets your hopes up that things are going to change and then followed up with a bunch of poor outings. The Mets have scored three runs or fewer five times in the last eight games. They also had a 12-run day in that span."

It is a team that can no longer fall against the crutch of the extended stretch of terrific baseball they played between the Junes these last two seasons. David Lennon Newsday: Mets' offensive woes have become inexcusable, and the season may be sinking as a result. "And with that, we’ve now officially downgraded the Mets’ quality of play from inexplicable to inexcusable. What’s there to say? A $333 million team that began the season with World Series aspirations, and boasted baseball’s best record on June 12, is now 10 games under .500 (18-28) since that high-water mark with an offense that’s barely breathing."

"Continuing a recent trend of playing down to their level of competition, the Mets wasted scoring chances in the mid-to-late innings Tuesday night in a 6-3 loss to the Rockies at Coors Field...In their four losses to the Angels and Marlins, they scored four runs or less in each — as was the case again Tuesday. ..With this loss, they remained 1 ½ games behind Atlanta for the third wild-card spot..." 

Brian Joura Mets360: "Luis Severino, making his first start in Coors, didn’t pitch bad but was let down by his defense and a cheap homer. His final line was 5 IP, 5 R, 4 ER with 0 BB and 5 Ks. The home run he allowed looked like a routine fly ball off the bat but it just kept carrying and went over the wall for a two-run blast." 

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets lose to Rockies, but Luis Severino's velocity rebounds. The Mets got shut down by lefthander Kyle Freeland and a series of relievers. The ERAs of the Colorado pitchers: 5.65, 5.82, 5.40, 6.61, 3.64...The good news for the Mets (59-54): Luis Severino looked a lot more like himself, even if he didn’t have the line to match...he boasted a season-best average fastball velocity of 97.1 mph and threw his hardest pitch of his year at an even 99.

Mets sweep the Cubs with two identical scores.  In Game 1, Jody Davis hits a 2-run homer off Dwight Gooden to tie the game at 5.  It stays that way until the 12th when Mookie Wilson singles in Keith Hernandez and Gary Carter to put the Mets up 7-5.  The Mets needed the extra run as Terry Francona doubled and Jerry Mumphrey singled him in making it 7-6 before Roger McDowell retired the next two to end it. 

In Game 2, Mets led all the way behind Gary Carter's 2-run homer and Howard Johnson's Solo Shot.  Mets needed all runs as the Cubs scored two in the 9th off Doug Sisk to make it close.  Sisk got Bob Dernier to ground into a double play with the tying run at 1st and Jesse Orosco retired Jody Davis on a fly ball fto seal the win.

Darrell Evans and Jack Clark hit back to back homers off Pat Zachry (L,5-11) in the 1st but while Zachry settled down Ed Halicki (W,9-9) was putting up zeros over the first 6 innings.  Giants put the game away in the 6th when Marc Hill doubled in two to send Zachry to the showers and Willie McCovey doubled in two more in the 7th off Rick Baldwin.  Down 7-0, Doug Flynn singled in two runs in the 7th and Bruce Boisclair singled in another in the 8th but it was too little, too late in the 7-3 loss.

Ken Boyer's 3-run homer in the 4th broke a 5-5 tie and put the Mets up 8-5.  While that capped the Mets scoring for the day, the Cards were not done.  Jack Hamilton's (L,6-12) wild pitch scored Mike Shannon with the tying run in the 7th.  Shannon's single in the 8th off Hamilton scored Curt Flood with the go-ahead and eventual winning run.  Ron Swoboda and Larry Elliot each go 3 for 5 for the Mets in the defeat.
