NY Post: Returning Brandon Nimmo bugaboo only adding to longlist of Mets problems. “In a Mets lineup that has flailed, no one has had
bigger issues making contact than Nimmo. In 23 games since July 12, Nimmo has
struck out 34 times — his 33.3 percent rate the seventh highest in baseball in
the span entering Monday — during a kind of funk that Nimmo has dealt with in
the past…For six straight games, all losses, Nimmo has not recorded a hit. The
outfielder is 0-for-19 with six walks and 12 punch-outs in the stretch.”
NY Sports+: The NL East reality that awaits flailing Mets. ““Off on Monday, the Mets dropped six games behind the Phillies, their largest deficit of the season in a division they led as recently as Aug. 2, when Philadelphia beat Cincinnati…The team has been streaky, has talent and crucially has seven more games remaining against the Phillies. There is time, and there is opportunity.” (Subscription required)
Jon Heyman NY Post Sports+: Mets spiraling toward theunfathomable with only one thing left to save them. “The Mets do somehow remain
in playoff position, even after losing 11 of 12 games. (I’m not sure if that or
the Yankees remaining in playoff position is the bigger miracle.) Plus, there
are great names in their room.”
Will Sammon The Athletic: "The Mets’ bullpen failed them over the weekend (to be fair, the Mets went 3-for-39 combined after the sixth inning of each game against the Brewers, including no hits after the sixth inning on Sunday). But no matter how good the Mets’ bullpen is or is supposed to be, the starters failing to provide any length is not sustainable. Making a change to the rotation wouldn’t fix all the Mets’ issues — and others certainly exist. But it’s at least an attempt at doing something differently when the status quo continues to not be good enough." (Subscription required)
Anthony DiComo Mets.com: The prospect re-rankings are out,
and the Mets have a new No. 1. Carson
Benge is the new #1 followed by #2 Jett Williams, #3 Nolan McLean, #4. Jonah
Tong, #5 Brandon Sproat.

1969 | Ed Kranepool becomes the Mets all-time home run leader for the young franchise when he goes deep off Don Wilson in the fourth inning of the team's 8-7 loss to Houston at the Astrodome. The 24 year-old first baseman passes Jim Hickman, who had 60 round-trippers for the Amazins from 1962-66. |
2000 | At Shea Stadium, the Giants get two unusual runs in the fourth inning as the Mets outfielder Benny Agbayani catches what he thinks is the third out and gives the ball to a kid in the stands. The mental lapse of not knowing there was only one out in the frame allows both runners on base to score, but the Mets will prevail, beating San Francisco, 3-2. |
1977: The Pirates win twice over the Mets, 3 - 2 and 6 - 5. In the 2nd game‚ Mets 2B Felix Millan suffers a broken collarbone in a brawl with catcher Ed Ott‚ ending Millan's 12-year big league career.
