  • Mets: The win snapped a three-game losing streak and was just their third win in their last 17 games...have safely stolen 39 consecutive bases, the longest active streak in the majors...It is the second-longest such streak…trailing only the Red Sox (40, 2013-14)...They lead the majors with a 90.7% stolen base rate...They have been caught stealing only 10 times this year, which is the fewest in the majors.
  • Nolan McLean became the 43rd pitcher the Mets have used this season, which is the most in franchise history, it topped the previous high of 42 used in 2021...It is the second-most a team has used in Major League history only trailing the 2024 Marlins (45).
  • Nolan McLean (5.1 IP, 2 H, 4 BB, 8 K): Earned his first Major League win after tossing 5.1 scoreless innings and striking out eight in his Major League debut...He joins Matt Harvey as the only pitchers in Mets history to earn a win, strike out eight or more batters, and allow zero runs in their Major League Debut...His eight strikeouts are tied for the third-most by a Met in their Major League debut (also: Tom Seaver, Bill Denehy, and Kodai Senga)...The only Mets who have recorded more strikeouts in their Major League debut are Harvey (11) and Collin McHugh (9).
  • Francisco Lindor (2-4, 2B, RBI, SB): Lined an RBI double into right field in the third inning to put the Mets in front 1-0...He has recorded a hit in each of his last five games and an extra-base hit in each of his last four games...It is the first time he has done so this season and the first time since a five-game stretch from August 20 - 24, 2024…Stole his 20th base of the season in the seventh inning...It is the fifth time is his career that he has recorded a 20 HR and 20 SB season (third time as a Met).
  • Pete Alonso (1-4, 2B, RBI): Hit an RBI double to left field in the seventh inning to increase the Mets' lead to 3-0...The RBI marked his 100th of the season...Has now reached 100 RBI in four seasons…This season he is batting .333 (42-126) with nine doubles, 13 homers and 73 RBI with runners in scoring position.
  • Edwin Díaz (2.0, 2 H, ER, 2 K, HR): Earned his 24th save of the season after allowing one run over the final two innings...It is his fourth career save of at least 2.0 innings and his second this season (also: 7/12 at KC).

Brian Joura Mets360: "For weeks, if not months, fans were clamoring for the Mets to give their top pitching prospects a shot. They finally relented and Nolan McLean was up to the task. He pitched 5.1 IP without giving up a run and it certainly looked like he had gas left in the tank when he was removed. And the Mets did just enough to get him the win, as they edged the Mariners, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Citi Field."

Mike Puma NY Post: "The Mets didn’t need Nolan McLean to be a savior Saturday, but it sure didn’t hurt that the rookie assumed such a role. A team desperate for even decent starting pitching got the bonus package, as McLean — in his major league debut — helped the Mets, without much thunder offensively, forget their worries for an afternoon."

Andrew Tredinnick The RecordAfter issuing back-to-back walks to the Mariners' No. 8 and 9 batters, he buckled down against the top of the order. McLean struck out Arozarena on a sinker and after Raleigh singled, McLean gloved a chopper behind his back and turning it over to Brett Baty at second base to jump-start an inning-ending double play...He followed it up with a perfect fourth inning, striking out Eugenio Suarez and Jorge Polanco on curveballs in back-to-back at-bats. He worked around a leadoff single in the fifth.

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: "It was an impressive outing for the rookie right-hander, but when manager Carlos Mendoza went out to the mound in the sixth, fans booed the move. 'I heard them loud and clear,' Mendoza said. 'If I was sitting in the stands, I’d boo myself.'”

1968

After four tries, the Mets still haven't scored a run when Jim McAndrew starts a game with their 1-0 loss to Houston at Shea Stadium. In his first four major league appearances, the 24 year-old rookie right-hander has a puny 1.82 ERA, but is 0-4 due to the team dropping two 2-0 and two 1-0 decisions.

1969

The Mets sweep a doubleheader from the Padres for the second consecutive day, beating San Diego 3–2 in both ends of the Shea Stadium twin bill. Yesterday, behind solid starts by Tom Seaver and Jim McAndrews, the Amazins’ beat the Friars respectively, 2-0 and 2-1.

1973

At Shea Stadium, 42 year-old Willie Mays hits his 660th and final home run of his career off Cincinnati southpaw Don Gullett. The Mets first baseman, who played 21 seasons roaming the outfield for the Giants before coming home to New York last season, is third on the all-time home run career list behind Babe Ruth (714) and Hank Aaron (703).

2014

Michael Cuddyer is the 30th player to hit for multiple cycles, but becomes only the third player to accomplish the feat in both the American and National League, joining Bob Watson (Astros, 1977, and Red Sox, 1979) and John Olerud (Mets, 1997, and Mariners, 2001). The rare baseball occurrence is completed with an eighth inning double off Reds reliever Manny Parra, who yielded three of the hits in the outfielder's first cycle in 2009, pitching for the Brewers in a game against the Twins.

Baseball Reference:

1973 - At Shea Stadium, 42-year old New York Mets outfielder Willie Mays hits the 660th and final home run of his career off Reds lefty Don Gullett. Third-string catcher Hal King belts a pinch-hit homer in the top of the 10th inning giving Cincinnati a 2 - 1 victory.

1982 - Cincinnati's Mario Soto fans 15 Mets in a 9 - 2 victory to raise his league-leading strikeout total to 209. Soto walks none. He will finish the season with 274 strikeouts, second only to Steve Carlton's.

2010: The Mets place closer Francisco Rodriguez on the disqualified list and will not pay him until he is able to pitch again. He suffered a season-ending thumb injury punching his father-in-law last week, an action for which he faces criminal assault charges. The Mets may still try to void the last year of his contract as well, worth $11.5 million, although such a decision would be certain to be contested by the Players union.
