Brian Joura Mets360: "The Mets clubbed six home runs and Clay Holmes had a strong outing, leading the Mets to a 9-2 win over the Braves Saturday night in Atlanta. The Mets have now hit 39 homers in the month of August and in the post-game interview, Jeff McNeil said they were hitting the fastball."

Laura Albanese Newsday: Mets' Mark Vientos, Jeff McNeil hit two homers apiece in lopsided win over Atlanta. "Holmes, utilizing all of his pitches to great effect, allowed two runs and three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 6 1⁄3 innings. Before Nolan McLean’s sterling performance Friday,  the Mets hadn’t had a starter other than David Peterson complete the sixth inning since June 7. Holmes lowered his ERA to 3.60 in his second-longest MLB start."

Mike Puma NY Post: "McNeil, back in the lineup after a two-game absence with right shoulder discomfort, launched a three-run homer in the third inning that gave the Mets a 3-0 lead...Marte’s arm saved a run in the bottom of the inning. Jurickson Profar hit a fly to medium left field, on which Nacho Alvarez Jr. tagged up at third base. Marte...unleashed a perfect throw home to nail Alvarez for the final out."

Andrew Tredinnick The Record: "For the majority of the game, McNeil's three-run home run sustained the Mets until they tagged three long balls in the seventh inning and added two more in the ninth to throttle the Braves, 9-2, in front of 39,738 fans on Saturday night at Truist Park."

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: "The statement is this: Don’t count the Mets out just yet. They remain in second place in the NL East behind the Philadelphia Phillies, and in third place in the NL Wild Card standings, now 2.5 games up on the Cincinnati Reds."

Today in Mets History Per Ultimatemets.com:

Born on this date:

Transactions:

New York Mets signed free agent Kelly Stinnett on August 24, 2006.

2005
After fouling off three Jose Valverde full-count fastballs, Mike Jacobs goes deep at BOB to become the only player to hit four home runs during the first four games of a major league career. The Mets rookie, who hits two round-trippers in the 18-4 rout of the Diamondbacks, has homered four times, including his first big-league at-bat, in his first 13 plate appearances.
2013
For the first time in history, the All-Star Game starters face each other in the same regular season when Mets right-hander Matt Harvey and the Tigers' Max Scherzer are opposing pitchers in Detroit's 3-0 victory over the Amazins' at Citi Field, the site of this year's Midsummer Classic. The historic matchup ends with the New York starter, who gives up 13 hits in 6.2 innings, going on the DL for season-ending surgery, and his opponent becoming just the third pitcher to start a season with a 19-1 record, joining Rube Marquard (1912 Giants) and Roger Clemens (2001 Yankees).

2015
In a 15-7 victory over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, the Mets set franchise marks with eight home runs and 14 extra-base hits, including David Wright's second-inning blast in his first plate appearance since going on the DL in April due to a bad back. Wilmer Flores (2), Yoenis CespedesJuan LagaresTravis d'ArnaudDaniel Murphy and Michael Cuddyer also contribute to the team's new round-tripper record.

Baseball Reference:

1975In the second game of a doubleheader sweep, Giant hurler Ed Halicki no-hits the Mets, 6 - 0. The 6'7" righthander strikes out 10 Mets to improve his record to 8-10. Craig Swan takes the loss. Controversy arises when Rusty Staub hits a ball off Halicki's leg, which caroms to the 2B Derrel Thomas, who picks it up then drops it. Official scorer Joe Sargis rules it an E-4. New York columnist Dick Young, watching the game on TV, writes that it should be a hit and accuses Sargis of subscribing to the theory that the first hit off a starter should be a "good one." The no-hitter stands but UPI's Sargis loses his job as a sometime scorer.
